I suggest you price a used engine and transmission from wreaking yard.
If interior and body are good worth doing.
Colorado get engine used for $2k

Farmjazz, since the car is in Fort Collins, Here's a photo from last August as I entered Wyoming on I-25 between Fort Collins & Cheyenne. This Beetle was a rental from the Denver airport.

Also included is a photo of why I was there. I had to go into Wyoming to try to figure out what happened to a brand new semi-trailer coming back on its' first run. Aluminum wheels and bearing caps melt pretty easily. So do the sidewalls of a trailer. Even an insulated one like this. Forensics are so much fun This is part of my job.

Second photo shows us why steel belted radials are so darn heavy. There is a lot of steel in a tire.

Default Th-th-th-tha-tha-tha-that's all, folks!

Heard back from AudiUSA today. They found no problem with how the shop in Ft. Collins went about things, so done deal, dead car. Salvage price of $2,000, minus what I owe the shop for new coils. Labor charges for their "help" waived.

That truly sucks.

Did they ever look and check for valve / piston damage?

I'd keep pushing it, at least until you know what caused the failure.

I would bet anybody that it was stuck injector.

I am not sure if this can help in this case. May be with a good lawyer. But if anybody see lots of white smoke with misfire stop right away and don't let engine idle.
