2002 S8 surging in 5th gear
I bought the car at 14K miles and now has 23000K.It has always had a uh,uh,uh surge in 5th gear only going 40mph at 1900rpm at about 1/2 second intervals with the tach needle bobbing up and down about l00 rpm.The dealer says they can't detect it but on a really smoothe road you can feel it.The car runs perfectly otherwise but my warranty expires in 2 weeks so I am concerned. Any ideas? Also I can buy a AAA 5 yr extended warranty to 100K miles for $2560.Any experience with AAA. Thanks!

Torque converter lock up problem maybe (??), and ...
buy the warranty. No brainer, particularly if it covers suspension and CV joints which are almost sure things to need work on Audis over 5 years, and your first serious mechanical issue could get you to break even or better (tranny, ABS controller, steering rack, ECU or TCM, instruments problem, seat electrics shot, etc.

Thanks, I'll buy the warranty tomorrow. Regarding the surging though if it was the torque converter lockup wouldn't it surge in the lower gears as well as 5th since they lock up too?

Sounds like you need new O2 sensors
You can vag-com the O2 sensor output, I bet it's varying by 0.4 VDC or so.....
My 200q did the same exact thing, new O2 sensors fixed it!

Some do
I would have to look at it in Bentley, but at least the first couple don't on the A6 install of the HP24A in the 4.2. From road testing it, over a half hour period in suburban conditions--8 or ten lights spaced out, some neighborhood, some slight grade areas up to 45+, that while it hit 5th, the converter never locked until I got on the freeway. Until then it stayed frequently in the transitional mode per VAG COM.
If you haven't done it and have the cable, it's worth road testing it and running/logging the most likely readings, particularly if you put a bookmark when the problem occurs. Certainly log the torque converter function and the gear position. Maybe also log the relevant valve pressures. It might reveal something.
