I have heard a rumor that it is possible
But why would you want to? It's SO much easier to just pull off the front end. Takes about 20 minutes, and you would spend easily that much in frustration in skinned knuckles just getting the fan off.

I'm not sure that will help
I'm sure it will look fine from the backside - but I wouldn't count on that observation meaning that it *was* fine. My understanding is that the cords weaken and stretch, and it's pretty much invisible.
As skiracer says, you can get one side off without too much trouble.
