Default 2000 A8 wont 'talk' with the VAG COM

have 80K on a ZF rebuilt trans and have almost daily 'limp mode' event but cant find out what the problem is because the VAG COM cant read any codes in the car. Anyone have knowledge or experience with a non communication problem and the possible source of same ?

Has it ever been able to connect and communicate? If not make sure you have the correct drivers installed on your pc to be able to use the usb device, otherwise you could try going to control panel>device manager>select the device and change the property of the communication speed to a lower number(i think it is 10 by default)

I don't think you even have the vag-com setting properly. The ports have to be setup, any free port will do.

I dont do VAG COM stuff, the tech does it. But there have been priods in the past when there was no communication; this time though its lasted for months. And now it matters.

You could try bringing your car to another place, like Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts, they can pull codes for free

They only use a basic reader...will only pull a handful of codes that trip a CEL, but will not read most other detailed codes.

Plus if vagcom, wired correctly, won't read it, then neither will a code reader.

My 2000 had a similar issue, I was able to get communication by disconnecting the ABS module.

Its possible you have a module that is misbehaving badly and that is causing the problem. Try disconnecting the ABS first.
