My car almost burned down!

Good catch!!
I'm glad you caught it before it got any worse. You might want to give yourself an early New Years present. That S8 might be in line for 2006. Let us know what you find. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Re: My car almost burned down!
Gee Paul, if this wasn't serious it would almost be comical and funny. But I know from burning up my '85 928 in this fashion that it's no laughing matter. In my case it turned out to be a hot lead to the AC blower touching a worn out ground and some dried up and crumbling insulating foam and viola! - flame on!

Paul
I had a 1972 VW beetle that started smoking-- I mean really smoking (like your fire!) at a local shopping mall.
I ripped open the back seat and yanked the ground wire off of the battery after loosening the smoldering mess with a handy 10mm wrench. It turns out it was previous owner-induced repair work to replace the rear fenders that almost did me in. The cretan put a sheet metal screw through the main harness that runs along the driver's side rear fender. It eventually vibrated enought to hit a hot wire and the repair cost hundreds of dollars (paid for by insurance!).
I don't know if anything else got fried, but it sounds like you got to it in time to keep things to a minimum. I guess more duct tape would have prevented the problem, no?
