Default I installed another Garmin Nuvi Gps over thanksgiving, this time in the 98 A8.

I decided to make a bigger cut out in the center vent this time, this way you do not need to cut down Garmin as much, and I think it looks better. Fresh air still works, you just can't adjust the temp.

Anyways, I have a problem. No satellite reception!!
This A8 has both the hot and cold package and the solar sunroof. This gps works fine in the 99 A8 which only has the cold package. Odd thing is, it also works great in the 03 S8 which has both the hot and cold package. Only difference I see between the two cars is that the 98 A8 has the solar sunroof, the 03 S8 does not. Is the solar sunroof the sole reason for lack of reception or did the 98 come with different windshields and/or other enhancing insulating?

Default I'm going to say the windshield

I believe on the pre facelifts the solar package was different films as compared to facelists. I think cell phone reception in the car had a lot to do with Audi changing it.

Default IIRC, the Nuvi has an input for external antenna.

Now just where to locate that is another problem.
I would put it centered on the front edge of the trunk. YMMV
I like the install though. Nice job!

Default My winter/summer 99 gets great Tom Tom reception, with the Tom Tom on the suction cup mount

on the windshield.

Cell reception isn't bad, either.

So perhaps that change started earlier than the facelift.

Yep, in my car, GPS units like Garmins or TomToms don't stand a change of getting reception.

Default My Navigon GPS works fine........................

............ in its holder inside the windshield of my 97 A8 but the cell phones are erratic with a 70% working rate which I suspect might have more to with location.

external attenaes don't work, the car is aluminum, the magnet on the att won't work on aluminum, already tried it.

Default Get some 3M double-sided automotive tape. That's what I did with my XM antenna.

Got it from an automotive body shop supply house.<ul><li><a href="http://www.paulfrancispaint.com/servlet/Detail?no=16">Something like this.</a></li></ul>
