Default Help identify this and its function

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/51524/pic_0183.jpg"></center><p>Hi guys, I need your help. I just got home and heard this terrible sound. I narrow it down to this. The one circled. Since I don't have the Bently, so I don't know what it is or what does it do? Some help please. Thanks.

Default Heh, I'll give you the same answer I got when I asked that very same Q and...

...posted that very same picture:

"It's a valve"

OK, kidding aside, it seems that is precisely what ETKA calls it, so that *IS* technically a correct answer.

Big help huh? Maybe if it were part of the transmission we'd get a broader response 8-)?

More kidding aside, I assume you have an //S8 by the looks of your intake manifold. And I further assume your "valve" is "hissing". Mine did the same a few weeks back, yet to replace it. Also throws a lean code / CEL / slightly high idle. Here's another angle heh heh:

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/86747/dsc00042.jpg">

It's a PCV valve, and my best pricing I found online was ~ $99.00 or so. Apparently it's a widely shared part amongst VW / Audi, so shop around. Mine failed @ 104k - how about yours?

HTH, good luck!

ps. where you located?

Default Yep, it's '03 S8 and just reach 100k last week.

It made a hissing sound on and off. The sound seems more predominant when transmission is in gear.

Default Well good / refreshing news is at least it's a $100 part and 15 minute fix. Enjoy...

...those when you can get them on your Audi, I say!

Funny, they fail like clockwork then heh heh.

Again, where you located? Yours is the highest mileage '03 I've heard yet - congrats! I rack up like 22k / year - no garage queen here heh heh...

Default I am locate in Sacramento, CA but commute to South San Francisco to work

It's about 200 miles a day. I already racked up 28k mile in about 9 months. And love every minutes of it even in the traffic jam. I will have to do the major timing belt job later in the month. Right now I am looking up the parts and buy them so I will have everything by the time I get to it. I am looking forward to it actually.

Default Here's the ETKA part # and online source, I didn't have access last night to my email archive:

#ETKA Part Number 077 103 245A "Valve"

Online source is <a href="http://www.1stvwparts.com/">1stVWparts</a>, which is said to be the cheapest factory parts supplier around - $94.21.

HTH, good luck.
