Default Battery for 2001 A8L

The battery on my A8L has died, (I replaced the original A8L battery with an aftermarket one,). The Audi dealer told me that the aftermarket battery was 12V and that the A8L Audi battery (made by Valero I believe) puts out 14V. He quoted me a price of $270.00 installed, including reseting all the codes (radio etc) that are required when replacing the battery. Is that a reasonable price for an "Audi" battery?

Default 14V chipped battery. Cool

Seriously the dealer battery is much better than anything else out there. I bought an energizer battery 2 years ago $90. It's been replaced 3 times already under warranty, but every time It fails I have to go to the store wait until they test it 3x40-45 minutes. Plus I have to have a jumper cable in the car all the time.

Default Your dealer is twisting the truth (what a surprise).

An automative lead acid battery is composed of six nominal 2-volt lead/lead-oxide cells, six times two equals 12, which is is why an automotive battery is called a 12-volt battery.

More precisely, though, an individual fully charged lead acid battery cell puts out 2.23 volt, which results in 13.4 volt for the six cell "12-volt" battery. This applies to both Audi and aftermarket batteries. As Tozo said, the Audi battery is darn good and easily lasts 5 years, but it's not a seven cell battery or somehow put out two more volts than an aftermarket battery.

I replaced my '01 S8 battery earlier this year. The new Audi battery installed was moderately outrageously expensive, but I forgot what it cost. Sorry :-(

Default I'd think a quality aftermarket battery (like Interstate) would be fine.

(not stuff like Diehard and the like)

I've used an Interstate battery in my Porsche for the past five years and I haven't had any problems with it. Interstate also makes batteries in different profiles, so you should be able to match the original battery's size.

(The Interstate MTP-93 fits my 2001 S8, so it should work in your A8)

I'm two years into a $110 Interstate battery, no worries.

You also need to make sure, that your replacement battery has a vent pipe.

Default I think I paid $60 or $65 at Advance Auto Parts.

And I'm two or three years in.

Then again, I don't live in Yankeeland, and I have a garage, so I don't deal with extremely cold conditions.

Default Sears is another source for a quality replacement

Sears has a direct replacement group 49 battery. 5 year. I've had mine for over 2 years now and no problems. I believe I paid around $105 installed.

Good luck

Default I'm in Cleveland and the Porsche just sits in the garage during the winter.

...without a charger.

5 years and no problems.

(the MTP-93 that would fit my Audi is rated for 85 months)
