Audi Dealership wants me to sign a "no fault" waiver. Anyone else?
97 A8 starts intermittantly. Used the Ross-Tech software and came up with code 16706 which is a engine speed sensor in the Bentley manual. Found the sensor online ( now called a reference sender) for about $90.00. Jacked up car to see how to remove and couldn't find sensor from underneath. Lowered car and couldn't get my hand down far enough where I felt I could remove it safely. So I go to the Audi dealership and they tell me we can change my sensor for close to $500.00 but I have to sign a waiver stating any damage done during work on sensor is my responsibility and they are not liable. This is because car is old, sure 97 with 140,000 on it. Has this happened to anyone else out there? Last time car was brought in by last owner I heard wiring was ripped out and they had the car for over a month. I'm feeling nervous about this work being done but can't have a car that starts occasionally. Any help or feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The sensor is just few inches from the driver's side axle on the front.
I had a same problem last year. The wire was too close to the exhaust an melt the wires together. Unplug the connector under the hood, driver's side, between the engine and the firewall. It has a white connector. You need a 5mm Allen wrench to remove the sensor. there is a 5mm spacer washer behind it, don't forget to put it back with the new sensor.<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80919/5hp24a.jpg">

2nd that one....you can do it yourself
And I would tell the dealer to *uck off!
You could easily bring it to an independent, show them where it is and they could do it quickly on a lift for you.
It's probably less than an hour for somebody who has never done it before with a lift.

Are you sure that it's not the F125 switch causing this? Speed Sensor is a common fault code.
Next time the car doesn't start, run your shifter thru every gear and then back to PARK, then try a re-start.
F125 is the Neutral Saftey switch. If it starts to wear out, it will tell the computer that you are in gear even tho you are in Park. When that happens, you turn the ignition switch and absolutely nothing happens. No cranking, no nothing.

tell them to stick it -are they a proffesional workshop or not
If they want to take your cash in large sums then they have a responsibility to carry out the work and be responsible for resulting damage caused by their own ineptitude.
If they are not confident about the job go elsewhere.
