Default A8 Transmission - accountability??

I share in the reverse slipping issue - in my 2000 A8, with 68K... It seems to be an increasingly frequent issue in both A6 and A8 configurations - I plan to speak to the two dealers in my area (Minneapolis-St Paul) come Monday and find out if there is any after-warranty support offered from the factory. As A8 DriverDan noted, ZF has redesigned and improved on an acknowledged bad design on the F-seal...
As a side note, does anyone have a recommended tranny shop in the Minneapolis/Milwaukee/Chicago loop that could handle an overhaul?

Thanks

Scott B in snowy WI

Snowy B,

If you want a good price, you can go to King Transmission in Elmhurst, IL. They did mine ('97 A8 4.2 Quattro) for $2200 including a new valve body, torque converter and normal trans overhaul kit including the clutches. It shifts fine now, 10K on it since the overhaul a few months back. Anothe option-- albeit a few dollars more is Tozo's shop "Trans-fixed" in Palatine, IL. Both will do the job to your satisfaction I am quite sure.

Default Don't get stuck....

I went through the typical four stages of "unexpected bad news" - denial, negotiate, anger/cry, acceptance.

Denial: "Paul and Tozo are talking about some other problem on someone else's Audi."

Negotiate: "Mr. Dealer, you should help with this repair. I won't buy another Audi with this lack of support."

Anger: "Audi Advocate what kind of SHIFT are you guys making...even Hyundai offers a 10yr/100k warranty on their powertrain!?!? Its a $25 part that has failed that will cost over $3,000 to repair!!""

Acceptance: "Hey, its a wear part on a $75K luxury vehicle that performs like no other because of its very sophisticated tranny."

You might also want to call the ZF distributor in your area. I found mine to be extremely knowledgeable and open. Use link below to find them.

If you do get it rebuilt, make sure they buy the upgraded valve body and F-clutch/piston.

Let us know how your conversation goes with your dealer. As a last resort, ask for their help with parts, like the Audi ATF fluid (10 quarts).

Link from Audipages.com
