lifter noise - GONE !
I have been living with lifter ticking for the past few years, and finally have fixed it. The lifter noise would always start about 5-10 minutes after startup. From reading posts here and from www.12v.org, I decided to replace my pressure relief valves (the ones under the valve cover - 078-103-363P).
When i went to remove the old ones, they actually had come apart in peices ! I had to use a coat hanger to fish the parts out of the cylinder head. They must have been broken like this for years!
Needless to say, after installing the new ones, my Audi engine is silent. Its almost like having a new car !
I highly recommend this relatively easy fix. Just make sure you have the 12point tool to remove the old ones.

Re: lifter noise - GONE !
Greetings Eric, I too have that ever persistant tapping noise. I am waiting for the weather to break before tackeling the job. But now a twist, what is the 12 point that you were refering to.

Re: lifter noise - GONE !
My replacement valves had just a standard 10mm "bolt" head on them, however in the engine the old ones have a torx style 12-point 8mm head. Actually torx is probably not the right terminology - its called a "triple-square" i believe. Luckily i had the tool from the days of working on my VWs (its used on the CV joints).

You said you replaced the parts under the valve cover, did you mean valve cover or valley pan? Just a little confused as I did not know there were pressure valves under the valve cover(s)?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: lifter noise - GONE !
valve cover. i already had changed the ones in the valley pan, and that didnt fix the problem.
Take off the valve cover, pull off the black plastic splash sheild, and on the uppper right side you will see a 12pt bolt with a hole in the middle of it. This is the pressure relief valve.

I have the dealer technical bulletin on this if anyone wants it
Just give me your fax number. Got it from a local dealer, the infamous Zumbach Sports Cars here in NYC, who is quoting me $350 parts+labor.

I have a 92 Audi 100S with over 115k miles. It has automatic transmission, 2.8L V6 engine, and is not a quattro.
Noisy Lifters:
Thanks for your posting on noisy lifters. I too have had lifter noise for almost over a year now. Is it easy to replace the pressure relief valves on your own? Can I do it myself or should I go to the repair shop? How much would it cost me either way?
C V Joints / Axle:
The car also needs both front C V Joints. I have checked with almost all major part stores in the area and nobody has it in stock. Whenever they order one for me, it is either too long or too short or just doesn't look the same (???) - reason being that the car has a transmission code AZB and they just can't seem to get the exact right kind of axles or C V Joints that would fit on my car. If I don't find this soon, I may have to ship the old axles to a rebuilder (hope they would have the right parts for the axle) so that they can fix and send the same ones back. Don't know how much it would cost me. Has anyone faced this situation before? Where can I get these parts? Thanks.

Is it true Audi will not replace loud bypass valves? Mind makes a whistling/rattling noise between..
