Default GAMMA Radio Information & Unlocking Procedure

<b>GAMMA HEAD UNIT</b>

The radio goes into SAFE mode to prevent theft. While I think it's a useless feature (who steals car radios anymore, anyway?) that just makes more work for everybody including you, the owner, you will probably have to deal with this, and Audi still has the feature in new cars today.

To unlock your radio, you will need your <b>RADIO CODE</b> ... this is a 4-digit number that is assigned to your radio head unit.

If you don't have this number, your fate is in the hands of your local area Audi dealer. Good luck? (They can look it up based on your radio head unit serial number.)

<b>GAMMA Head Unit Information</b>

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/153/gammaradio.jpg">
(Gamma head unit with Bose face plate)

The Gamma head unit is found in the following Audi models:

<b>1993-1995 Audi 90
1994-1995 Cabriolet
1992-1994 Audi 100, S4, V8
1995 Audi A6, S6</b>

The part numbers for the Gamma are...

Audi # 4A0 035 093
Audi # 4A0 035 192

<b>Gamma Features</b>

Different face plates for Bose vs. standard versions
Cassette player with auto-reverse
AM/FM tuner, 4 AM presets, 8 FM presets, DX/Local, Seek/Scan
Controls for 6-disc or 10-disc CD changer (CD changer optional)
Bass, Treble, Fader
Dolby noise reduction
Telephone mode auto volume attenuation
Dual-diversity antenna system
Anti-theft coding
Mode display in instrument cluster
Made by Blaupunkt

Two versions of Audi OEM CD changers are compatible with the Gamma radio (in Bose-equipped systems), one is 6-disc, one is 10-disc. The 6-disc version part # is 4A0 035 111. The 10-disc version is no longer available. CD changers were not available as an option on the Audi 90 or the Cabriolet.

<b>SAFE mode unlock procedure for Gamma head unit</b>

1) Park car. (Note: Experienced radio unlockers have been known to perform this task while driving, but it is extremely dangerous and may result in a fatal crash. Not advised.)

2) Turn radio on. SAFE will show in the display. (Note: The car does not have to be on, nor does the key have to be in the ignition or in any position.)

3) Press the hold the <b>FM1</b> and <b>AM</b> buttons simultaneously and hold until "1000" shows on the display. Release the buttons. Do NOT press these buttons again, otherwise the radio will consider "1000" to be the code.

4) Enter your radio code. Use the radio station preset buttons (1, 2, 3, 4) to enter the four-digit code number from your radio card. Preset button 1 corresponds to the first digit, Preset button 2 corresponds to the second digit, etc. Each press of the button increments the number by 1. So for example, if your code was 1927 you would press...

- 1 <b>0 times</b>
- 2 <b>9 times</b>
- 3 <b>2 times</b>
- 4 <b>7 times</b>

Which would show <b>1927</b> in the display.

5) Once you have your code entered in the display, repeat step 3 until 'SAFE' displays again. Once 'SAFE' displays, release the buttons. The radio should return to the station it was on when it went into safe mode. Your radio is now unlocked.

<b>If your radio is still locked</b> then you entered the incorrect code.

When an incorrect code is entered, the word 'SAFE' appears in the display again, first flashing and then continuously. You can repeat the above steps to unlock the radio once more. If an incorrect code is entered again, the radio will be locked for about an hour. After one hour, you may try again twice before it locks again for an hour.

Default Re: GAMMA Radio Information & Unlocking Procedure

I got a replacement radio, got the code off guy i bought it off, turned out the code was wrong.
Anyway I put the code in twice and "Safe" flashed and then stayed on, so i waited a about three hours and went to try again
pressed FM1 and AM and nothing happened
It wont let me retry.
So i waited 24 hours and tried again nothing happened,.. radio is lit up still saying SAFE.
Any Ideas
I have a gamma and a 93 100s.

Default Clarification regarding Muhammad's instructions

I initially assumed that Muhammads' instructions for entering the first digit of the security code via radio preset #1 indicated to push it zero times because the readout must default to "1." However, this was inconsistent with the subsequent instructions for presets 2, 3, and 4.

- 1 0 times
- 2 9 times
- 3 2 times
- 4 7 times

I decided it must be a typo, and I'd figure it out when I attempted the procedure myself.

It appears that the first digit of the security code must be a "1" or a "0" because radio preset button #1 only toggled the first digit of the security code between "1" and "0." Actually, it toggles between "1" and blank, which I assume must be a zero. Why? I read elsewhere that the code is actually on the stereo, and I found two stickers on mine with 4-digit numbers on them, one of which began with "0." Unfortunately, I didn't find this number until after having tried the other 4-digit number twice, and the unit had locked itself in SAFE mode. More than an hour later, I tried to enter the 4-digit number that starts with "0," but holding down the "FM1" and "AM" buttons wouldn't bring up "1000" again; I'll give it a few hours, and try again. I'll update then.

Default Update on entering codes

Regarding previous post: I let the car sit for 8 hours, then tried to enter the code again: wouldn't even allow me to try to enter it; just said "SAFE". I then removed the radio overnight, reinstalled it, then tried again: it would only display "SAFE". Later, I had the radio on and happened to turn on the ignition...and it displayed "1000"! I then read in another forum that, after having failed to enter the correct code twice the first time, the next time you try, you must first turn on the radio, then the ignition, then it'll let you try to enter the code again. Go to http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/troubl...radiocode.html for more details.

And regarding my remarks about Muhammad's instructions, I somehow managed to overlook the blatant fact that the radio initially displays "1000" when it's ready to let you enter the code, so his instructions regarding how many times the buttons should be pushed are correct. Sorry.
