Replacing instrument lights on 96 A6 Quattro Wagon
1. Removal of the instrument cluster, of course.
2. Shifter gear display:

Use the soldering iron and solder sucker to remove the through hole leads of the bulbs and replace with Radio Shack $1.49 bulb package.

3. Odometer display, just a simple bulb, twist off or can be custom made by getting the same type of bulb at Pep Boys or Kragen and re-insert into the oranger holder.

4. Temperature display bulbs.

Removed the circuit and this is what it looks like (a little blurry, but I'm sure you will see it when you open it up):

replace with the same bulb in the shifter gear selection display.
Spend about $5 and you will have Xmas lights light up again in your instrument cluster at night!!!!

I just finished replacing my gear selector & outside temp bulbs. After replacing the ignition..
switch, the bulbs (all three of them) went out at the same time after re-installing the instrument cluster. Although the original bulbs lasted over 8 years on my '96 A6 Avant, it was still I pain just to replace burned out bulbs. Isn't it fun to own an Audi?

Let me ask you a question on the instrument cluster
My obc always says I have back up lights out, which I assume is do to a bad reverse switch which I understand is a biotch of a job to do. I can live with it because I have for this long but the beeping from the obc is driving me nuts. Is there a speaker in that cluster that I can disable? The car has 220k miles on it so I am looking for a cheap fix.

There is a warning buzzer on the side instrument panel (the one w/ the oil gauge). Its...
mounted on the rear of the cluster in a bracket (no screws). If you want to disable it, just unplug and removed it.

Re: Replacing instrument lights on 96 A6 Quattro Wagon
ltooz_a6_a8, thanks for the helpful post, I plan on saving some otherwise wasted $'s and repair rather than replace my shifter display. Just an FYI, was at Radio Shack today, and it took some hunting to find the bulbs you have them listed as #7219, which is indeed printed on the package, however their inventory number, also printed on the package is 272-1092, you will get a faster find using that number. Thanks again for the great tip.
