What is the best radar detector out there for the California area?

V1- is the best I've used. K is popular on motorcycle units, X in Lake Tahoe, and Ka in CHP.
True, I get a lot of false alerts on X (especially around BART stations and tracks), but 2x the X turned out to be a "see your speed" unmanned unit in Lake Tahoe/I80. The cruiser was hidden within sight of the sign, and was pulling people over after they passed the sign. He didn't need the radar, the unmanned unit showed the speed.
In the East Bay area, K is becoming too popular on suburban moto cops (town of 35k has 3 moto cops- your local taxes at work, Poncharelo wanna-be's- argggh)
Ka on some local cruisers, but mostly on CHP on I5, 101, and north Sacramento/Sierra regions.
I thought about disabling X, but worry too much about Mr. Murphy. It would be just my luck to have it off, and get tagged by an X band radar.
Cheers-
Ernesto

Either the V1 or Passport 8500...more
Most of the opinions you will get on which one is best is based on which unit that particular person purchased. I've never heard anyone really complain about their purchase of either a V1 or an 8500. At $300-$400, people aren't about to admit they would have purchased something else.

no its not. I have one
Check this reference below.
Much like other states, California merely bans the use of a scanner in illegal activities.
The basic things to remember are these:
Fixed-location (base) police scanners are legal in all states. The FCC says so.
In most (all?) states it is a felony to use a scanner in the comission of any crime.
In some states (I remember Utah for sure) it is illegal to have a hand-held (mobile) scanner. California is not one of these states.
The gist of the message above, which is use a police scanner in your car to avoid police is both illegal in most states and a really stupid idea. There are so many different frequencies in use in law enforcement that it is difficult to be sure you are covering them all.

http://www.panix.com/~clay/scanning/rules/cpc2.html</a

Go with the V1
It seems to pick up 'backscatter' really well, where a radar facing away from you hits a freeway pylon or something and reflects back. I see it all the time on Hwy-85 just south of I-280 in the mornings. A motorcycle cop stands beside his bike with the R-Gun resting on his seat, under the freeway overpass just south of 280 hitting guys coming southbound. My V1 sees him at least 1/2 mile away and the gun is facing away from me!
Also works *great* with CHP on Hwy-101.
