Default San Francisco A6 Gathering, Sat Nov 3: new details! Sign in please!

<b>A6 Gathering of San Francisco Bay Area
Saturday, Nov 3, 10:00 am</b>

Instead of meeting in San Francisco, a few of us have determined that a drive starting in the <i>mid-peninsula</i> would work better overall. Also, this should provide plenty of <i>back roads driving</i> and less traffic, and be closer to home for most of us (except for our Fairfield friends, thanks for communiting!). And, thanks to Larry for making this happen!

At the end of the planned route, there is a chance either to join Hwy 85 or 280 in Cupertino and head home, or grab a Starbucks and discuss the day.

So, here is the plan, if you are all in agreement. Please post a follow-up, sayin if you can make it, and if this plan works for you!

<b>Summary:

</b>Highway 92 to Skyline, South to 84, 84 to Pescadero Creek Rd, then to the coast. South on Hwy 1, then inland near Davenport (well North of Santa Cruz) starting on Bonny Doon Rd, to Felton at Hwy 9. North on Hwy 9, to a turnout just shy of Skyline for pictures, then 9 to Pierce Rd into Saratoga and freeways home.

From start to end point, roughtly 3 hours.

<b>Meeting Place: </b>

A meeting place that we can all find is the <A HREF="http://www.frserragarden.com/">Highway Rest Stop with the Statue of Father Junipero Serra</A>. You can see the statue from either side of the Freeway, pointing across the highway towards <A HREF="http://pages.prodigy.net/rhorii/xtalsprg.htm">Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir</A> and the San Andreas Fault.

Reach the Rest Stop by coming North on Hwy 280, just past Bunker Hill exit (aka: Crystal Springs, Hwy 35/Skyline, just North of Hwy 92). If you are coming South, you'll have to exit here and turn around. <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&amp;Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San +Mateo&amp;state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.529900&amp;mln=-122.356100&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;mag=9&amp;c s=7&amp;BFClient=&amp;BFKey=&amp;poi=&amp;poititle =&amp;map.x=85&amp;map.y=59">This Map</A> shows its location (see text "rest area access"... zoom out to see the surrounding highways).

<b>Detailed Directions: </b>

From there, I propose the following, somewhat twisted but very enjoyable drive.
1. Exit the Rest Stop, going North to the <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&amp;Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San +Mateo&amp;state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.536100&amp;mln=-122.362500&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;mag=9&amp;c s=7&amp;BFClient=&amp;BFKey=&amp;poi=&amp;poititle =&amp;map.x=76&amp;map.y=4">Black Mountain Exit (Golf Course Drive)</A>.
2. At top of exit, turn left past the onramps, then left again on Skyline Blvd (35) South, paralleling the freeway. Pass Crystal Springs and Bunker Hill.
3. <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&amp;Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San +Mateo&amp;state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.528200&amp;mln=-122.362300&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;mag=8&amp;c s=7&amp;BFClient=&amp;BFKey=&amp;poi=&amp;poititle =&amp;map.x=293&amp;map.y=363">Turn right on Highway 92</A> (also is Skyline, 35, continuation of Canada Rd).
4. At the summit, turn South on Skyline <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&amp;Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San +Mateo&amp;state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.512400&amp;mln=-122.350900&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;mag=8&amp;c s=7&amp;BFClient=&amp;BFKey=&amp;poi=&amp;poititle =&amp;map.x=119&amp;map.y=390">(where the Memorial park is)</A>, and enjoy the panorama and good road conditions. I rarely see CHP up here, but there is always a first time. Watch for bikes and motorcycles!
5. When we reach Sky Londa, we will <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San+Mateo&amp; state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.377800&amp;mln=-122.263400&amp;name=&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;B FKey=&amp;BFCat=&amp;BFClient=&amp;mag=6&amp;desc= &amp;cs=7&amp;newmag=7&amp;poititle=&amp;poi="> go right at 84</A> (La Honda Road), and through the town of La Honda. This is a fairly fast and familiar road.
6. After La Honda, watch for a <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&amp;Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San +Mateo&amp;state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.314900&amp;mln=-122.272800&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;mag=8&amp;c s=7&amp;BFClient=&amp;BFKey=&amp;poi=&amp;poititle =&amp;map.x=194&amp;map.y=246">left turn onto Pescadero Creek Road</A> (toward Sam McDonald County Park). This is preferred over 84 because of gravel on 84 recently.
7. Within a few miles, take the right fork to stay on Pescadero Creek Rd where it meets Alpine Rd.
8. At this point, we are on a smaller, very fun canyon, Pescadero Creek Rd, which goes all the way to the coast. I suggest we stop and turn right at Stage Rd in Pescadero, and pull over there. It is a cute crossroads town where we can grab a snack or lunch if the time is right.
9. An enjoyable side trip is to continue North on Stage Rd to where it meets Hwy 84. This stretch of road has no lines, no shoulders, and is just a locals' road through some ranchland. On <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&amp;Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San +Mateo&amp;state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.301400&amp;mln=-122.384400&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;mag=7&amp;c s=7&amp;BFClient=&amp;BFKey=&amp;poi=&amp;poititle =&amp;map.x=200&amp;map.y=221">this map</A>, it is the vertical squiggly line from bottom to top. It was quite fun in our A6 4.2! This takes us to San Gregorio State Beach and Highway 1.
10. Taking <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&amp;Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San +Mateo&amp;state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.217000&amp;mln=-122.289700&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;mag=6&amp;c s=7&amp;BFClient=&amp;BFKey=&amp;poi=&amp;poititle =&amp;map.x=237&amp;map.y=228">Highway 1 South</A>, we can stop in Davenport for lunch (more to eat here than in Pescadero).
11. Just South of Davenport, we turn inland towards home on a back route that we enjoy very much. First we turn up Bonny Doon.
12. At an <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San+Mateo&amp; state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.039500&amp;mln=-122.140100&amp;name=&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;B FKey=&amp;BFCat=&amp;BFClient=&amp;mag=6&amp;desc= &amp;cs=7&amp;newmag=7&amp;poititle=&amp;poi=">int ersection</A>, take the left which is Pine Flat Rd (passing Smith Grade on the right).
13. Stay on Pine Flat until we hit Empire Grade, and turn right.
14. Take a left on Felton-Empire Grade (different from Empire Grade) into <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&amp;Pyt=Tmap&amp;addr=&amp;city=San +Mateo&amp;state=CA&amp;slt=37.563099&amp;sln=-122.324501&amp;mlt=37.039500&amp;mln=-122.140100&amp;zip=&amp;country=us&amp;mag=7&amp;c s=7&amp;BFClient=&amp;BFKey=&amp;poi=&amp;poititle =&amp;map.x=365&amp;map.y=152">Felton</A> at Highway 9.
15. Turn left on Highway 9 (unless you wish to go home towards Santa Cruz by turning right).
16. Bear right on Highway 9, passing 236 (twice, it is a loop).
17. A few miles past the second joining of 236, but a few miles before we reach Skyline (Hwy 9), there is a large, paved turnout on the right with restrooms and a great view out over the basin and forest. We can stop there, take pictures, and regroup.
18. From there, we can travel farther North past skyline, down 9 toward saratoga. I recommend a left on Pierce Road (toward and past the Mountain Winery concert venue) to avoid construction, and its a nicer drive.
19. A left at Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road aims us towards onramps at Hwy 85, and beyond that, at Hwy 280. Or, a stop at Starbucks in a strip mall on the right is an option for the thirsty.

Default Sorry, can't make it.

Kidding!

10 am? Alright; now I can sleep in 'til 6 am before getting up to wash the car.

Many, many thanks to Stoney for pulling together the driving plans. Sounds excellent.

East Bay Contingent:
Finman, Metz, Jimmy (anyone else?); let's meet at the Lafayette Starbucks at 8:45 am. Thirty minute coffee wake-up period and then 45 minutes to get down to the Father's Rest Stop should do us fine time wise.

Default Glad you're kidding, whew!

I don't think I'll wash for the drive. I'll wash afterwards!

Default I'll wash after as well, that way I can gain a few extra AIP's (Audi Insanity Points).

I scored a measly 155 points on the test, and am currently just "normal." I wish to score worse...I mean better...I mean worse...I mean...

Default Now you're talking; an excuse not to wash! :-) You know Finman's gonna, it's a genetic thing.

I thought that that was a Mid-West rule.

C'mon April, this is California, it <b><i>never</i></b> rains here.

Default my car is a mess, 10am is awefully early for a geek to rise on a weekend AND wash his car...

I suppose I will have to manage. my car is in an inexcusable shape right now.

Default Sounds good - not sure about East Bay meeting place

Larry, everyone is rebelling against your plans! I'll probably take 580 to 680 to 280, so going to North to Lafayette would be pretty far outta my way. Can I convince you guys to meet somewhere farther south? There's a Starbucks in Dublin right off the 580/680 junction, or possibly the Starbucks or Peets in Danville? Let me know what you think.

Default Damn bunch of recalcitrants is what you all are! ;-)

It's straight <b>East</b> to get to Lafayette for me! Man-o-man, you all are giving me a complex.

You're really going to drive all the way around the South end of the bay to get back up to a point North of the 280/92 interchange? I don't think I can do it, it would be something like 80 extra miles vs. crossing the San Mateo bridge off of 880.

Seriously, no problem...now I can sleep even later...there's a Peets and Starbucks both within a block of me, and I can just stay groggy 'til I get there.

See you all at 10 am!
