With Volvo being across the street from where I worked, we got to talk with the people over there. Their sales percentages were a joke ! Many customers waited until incentives had the cars well under wholesale and the dealer was cutting into the holdback. I would sell 17 to 28 cars a month. A salesperson there might sell 6 o 7 !!!! Volvo had a big bonus program to keep people there.
Saab is slightly better. Low number of dealers allow tighter price control. Customers still cheaper than Audi folks. Lots of people cheap out from the Audi and opt for the the Saab based solely on price. Then comes Audi. The slightly older/entrepreneur/socially adapted folks can be made to see reason when the difference is a few hundred dollars between better service and information vs lower price. People who are socially hostile can be a pain ( too many computer games, not enough human interaction ). Interestingly, the people who pay the most and mainly focus on getting the car, are the happiest. This is consistant. Not saying you should try to duplicate this if you are not so inclined, just mellow out. Don't allow yourself to get taken advantage of, but do not try to take advantage of others, either. Money is a tool to allow you to enjoy life. It can also be a tool to make others happy. Are you happy when you can make others happy ? Everyone wants to get a good deal. Nobody wants to feel like they were singled out to get a bad deal. Try to strike a balance. This is not a life and death struggle. Just because you can buy a car for less, ask yourself who helped show you the reasons you wanted this car over others ? Sometimes a thank-you is appropriate. Sometimes customer loyalty. Repeat after me, " be fair to others and blessings/good karma will follow you."
