I have removed the radio and climate controls, but I am stuck there, I've searched the forums and googled to no avail- thanks in advance,

Default Not yet- from the limited info I've seen, I don't think that would be necessary-

Default So, this is how I've removed it in the past....<edited with a few more pics>

You must remove the climate control to get at the retainer tabs on the top of the ashtray assembly. Of course, the radio has to be removed to get at the climate control bolts.

Start with removing the shift surround...it does make it easier to remove the ashtray assembly. Put the car in "N" and pull up on the rearward edge of the trim as shown here...

Then remove the radio using appropriate radio keys (note: these pics are from my 2001 2.7T with the Symphony I)...

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/hliu55/steering%20wheel/electronicsremoval1.jpg">

Next, remove the climate control using an 8mm socket to remove these two bolts...

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/hliu55/steering%20wheel/electronicsremoval2.jpg">

LOTS of wire connections in back of that thing...

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/hliu55/steering%20wheel/electronicsremoval3.jpg">

You have to press down on these two tabs on the top of the assembly (in the red circles below)

It is jammed in there pretty tightly. Easier if you had three hands, two to depress the tabs, and one to reach from behind and push toward the back of the car. PITA to get back in as well...make sure you do not scratch anything!

Default Thanks Boston Driver

Not the first time you have helped me on this forum, this time however it was an old thread but still useful. I pulled off the shifter surround and presto! out popped the ashtray. Quarter got stuck under the lighter base. Back to new and didn't even remove the radio/climate control. Thanks again. Hope you're still driving the A6.
