Finally...RNS-E installed and operational...
Ok, so here it is. After ordering the RNS-E in December, I finally got it installed today. Here are some pics. This thing looks fantastic. I am going to post about my experience with this mod in the near future, because I think it's important to reflect on what was needed for a non-tech-oriented buyer. It was quite a procedure for me. Props to TeddyBGame. He helped out a lot and configured the wires to make the install much easier. I appreciate it and recommend anyone interested in this mod to contact him directly for input. For now, here she is. My mod included: a new OE submarine GSM/GPS antenna, Sirius satellite receiver, and RNS-E unit. Overall, I probably saved around $500 to $700 over an Audi direct unit. All totaled, I spent around $2,500. If I was more familiar with electronics and installing, I probably could have saved about $500 extra, but that is part of what I'll write up once I get more experience with the unit. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Same boat here...
If I had an '02+ car, I'd probably do it. I hate having to replace the climate control faceplate and surround above radio to the later style for color match. I'm still looking into an RNS-D if I can find one at a decent price.

I'm in the same boat - your install looks fantastic!
Rob, Ted is also doing my harness.
Anyone considering this upgrade - give him (TeddyBGame) a shout!
The wiring and connection of Phatbox, XM, OnStar, RNS-E and ultimately bluetooth telematics was a little daunting to attempt without help and he's got it all put together, right down to the part numbers and length of wire you need to order. You've even convinced me I need to do the submarine antenna too.
Well done.

Thanks all. It's quite an investment, but...
It does add value to the car--even though it may not enable me to recoup it all. Plus, I'm thinking about the personal enjoyment with a new cool toy over the life of the car.
Believe it or not, the installer had absolutely no problems with the sub antenna. Except for the fact that the OE antenna didn't come with an install template, it was straightforward. He didn't even have an issue with taking down the alcantara headliner. He did have to drill a hole, which I was a little concerned about, but it turned out fine and is on there tight. I tried to get him to take pics of this step, but he couldn't.
I didn't do the BT connection (yet), but Ted wired the harness for a quick plug-n-play at a later date.
Once some fundage frees up, I may get a multifunction steering wheel and BT kit. But, that's pretty far down the road.
