Replaced window guides this weekend; I'd add two caveats to the tech article...
1. Prior to removing the frame from the door, unclip/unplug the rubber trim from the top leadingand trailing ends of the door. It took me a few tries at lifting the frame out to find that there are intergrated plastic plugs that engage the door (two on the leading edge, one on the trailing).
2. When marking the frame bolts, mark the shims as well! The shims are wedge shaped, so record their height relative the the frame, door, etc. My CQ window frame has shims, but they're flat so position wasn't critical.
Other than that, quite an easy job. Took me about 1.5 hours including chatting on the phone here and there as well as cleaning, lubing the frame rails and the rubber window seals/guides.

Window Guide Replacement

Sure thing, the only tools I needed were...
- T45 Torx for the 4 window frame bolts.
- T25 Torx for the 2 glass 'clamp' bolts.
- Small (#1?) flathead to push the window switch out.
- Medium (#2?) Phillips for the 2 door panel screws and 1 rubber seal screw
- Wire snips for 1 wire tie holding the wiring harness to the frame.
PS - there is a harness connector for the mirror hidden behind a black piece of foam by the mirror.
PPS - The new guides are pink in color and ran me $7/pair (they're usually about $6 each); my local dealer had 24 in stock...shows that they frequently replace 'em. :/

I replaced the carriers myself for the front drivers side ['99 A6 2.8 Quattro] and it was pretty easy. Thanks for all the pictures! It helped a lot! It probably saved me a lot of money. I ordered the parts for 3.95 each [shipping was 15.00] and it took me about two hours [but I took my time to look around see the connections and the solutions and be amazed by the German engeneering].
I like this forum; great work you guys!
PS: I'll soon have a question about the motion sensor switch replacement.
