Default Follow up to my timing belt tools rant where I found the valve timing was waaay off on my A6.

Just an upadate for those who care:
When I took the 1999 A6 Avant apart to change the timing belt I found that the old belt was not correctly installed. The valve timing was off 10-12 degrees, a significant amount. After doing the service and setting the timing correctly, it is like driving a different car. Prior to the service the car was gutless. Not horribly slow, but noticably slower than the sedan with the same engine. After the service, the car feels great; about as good as it gets for a 2.8.

So again I say: Always use the timing belt tools and take the time to set the valve timing correctly. Just because the car runs does not mean that the timing is correct.

Original timing belt tools rant.

Good to hear it! I am still amazed that it ran as well as it did like that.

Default i find it hard to believe..

...I find it hard to believe your timing was off even one tooth and wasn't throwing a CEL with a fault code for the cam sensor. Amazing.

Default I don't think it was off a full tooth.

Both cams were in sync with each other but the cams and crank were not timed correctly. I think whoever did the job last time was sloppy.
