Speaking of free service...does anyone go by the 1yr/10K mile Audi Advantage oil change interval?

because those engineers have no incentive...
to ensure that we get, say, 150,000-200,000+ miles out of an engine as opposed to, say, 100,000 miles. They have an incentive to keep the projected maint. costs down (longer service intervals) while making sure the car doesn't blow up during warranty.
That doesn't mean they're choosing the optimum service interval, just one that balances alarmingly premature breakdowns (those during the first 50k under warranty) against keeping Audi's costs down (for the projected service costs).
That said, my oil analysis over the years in several cars (see Stoney's FAQs) shows that in a non turbo like the 2.8, a 10k/ 1 yr. interval should in most cases be OK if a good synthetic oil is used.
I still tend to change mine ('01 2.8 Avant) every 5k or so.

Every 10k using Amsoil Series 2000 0W30. I really should have it tested, though...
... to see if going that long is OK. Anyone know the link that describes how to have your oil tested?

No one is saying that, and I HIGHLY doubt that any real engineer is behind teh 10k mile oil change..
Unless you are using synth (I do not) and driving like an old lady, 10k is too long, even with teh huge filters on our cars.

I have been very happy with the results from Blackstone, I use them for
all 4 of my cars (old and new) and have been impressed with their comments and recommendations. I've spent a good part of my chemical engineering career working with large industrial engines and have been exposed to oil analysis for many years. These guys IMHO have the proper focus for passenger cars without getting off the track in theoretical detail. I can send you a sample analysis for a Audi V8 (my car) for reference if its of any value.

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/eng_balloon_report_.html</a

be wary of a-hole service advisor who are saying that is not on "Audi's Approved Oil List"
last oil change w/ the avant with German Castrol and the guy pulled that.

Looks pretty good... is that sample they show a "standard" analysis?
They're a bit more expensive than the lab I've been using in Knoxville, TN but it's an interesting report & web site.
