Default Oil Quality Standards...........Again

Tech bulletin 05-02
1997-2006
All requiring Oil Quality Standards VW 502 00 and 505 01
This is a World wide list of oils 242 long. All but 19 (5w-30) call for 5W-40. For my 2004,Castrol Syntec says 5w-40 and not the 5w-30 my owner's manual shows and was recommended by the dealer service. So why do they deliver my car with Castrol 0w-30? I guess I go looking for Castrol syntec 5W-40.
Wish they'd make up their mind.

Default Joke?

Not if Audi decides your next engine problem is because you didn't use an approved oil from the list............that wasn't available when you bought your car!

Default they are pulling a bunch of b.s. with these "oil standards"

your manual lists only 0W-30, 5W-30, & 5W-40 as approved oils for the 3.0. The dealers are now pulling "approved oil" bullsh1t when you take your car in and bring your own.

I've been running Syntec 0W-30 in both cars, and recently had the 02's oil changed (provided Syntec 0W-30, which the service manager personally knows I run).

The bonehead service advisor labels the invoice as a "non-approved" oil. I find this rediculous given the oil far surpasses the junk that the dealer would normally use under a Audi Advantage, and is it's type is listed as in-spec in their manuals. ACEA specs list 503.01 as high performance, extended drain oils, which Syntec 0W-30 meets.

The manual is the consumer's standard. Audi tries to put some disclaimer on their oil sheets that they maintain the right to change whatever they want and whenever......

I am currently in a dispute with AofA about the oil they put in my car. They used castrol 10w-30. The VW 502.00, which they say is needed to maintain my warranty, does not have 10w anything. I'l post when I get a result.

Default Unless you live in a place of extreme temperatures and

drive the car on the track on a regular basis you will not have any problems with any oil at the correct viscocity for your climate.

The most important item is to replace your filter at each oil change and not to allow your oil to get 'dirty'. It should look oily and not muddy. If you see sludge or white/grey deposits in the oil you need to check for coolant leaks and also if gas is getting into the oil.

You need to make sure that the car gets hot on a regular basis so the any gas or water is boiled off. Frequent short trips are real killers and makes it necessary to change oil more frequently.

Change your oil by the book to avoid any warranty issues. More frquently if you have too much money ;-)

Default Where does one see this bulletin? Which models/engines apply?

My 2001 4.2 manual says 0W30 and this is what I've been using.
<a href="https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/tso.aspx">AMSOIL - Series 2000 Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil</a>

My wife's 97 A4 1.8 lists many weights, but for warm climate we settled on <a href="https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/aro.aspx">AMSOIL 20W-50</a>, IIRC.

Default I'm running Castrol Syntec 5W-40 in the 03 3.0

and it seems to be doing fine. It should be ok in my weather and ok for your neck of the woods.

Default Audi has this listed...

on their "My Audi" section on their site. They have a PDF, and on the page where it links to the PDF, it says these oils are approved for use in all Audis.

My Audi, Tips, Care &amp; Maint, "Audi Approved Engine Oil"

Here's what it says on this page...I don't have it linked, it goes into my acct.

"Audi-approved engine oil

Updating Audi owners on Audi-approved products and services isn't simply a courtesy. It is an integral component of the "Never Follow" mission. Resulting in vehicles that make the most of the road. And drivers who make the most of their vehicles. The attached PDF lists the engine oils approved for use in all Audi vehicles. See your Audi dealer for additional information."<ul><li><a href="http://www.audiusa.com/common/images/Audi_Approved_Oil_Chart.pdf">http://www.audiusa.com/common/images/Audi_Approved_Oil_Chart.pdf</a</li></ul>
