Brushed Aluminum Trunk trim Installed
Thanks to Boston Driver and others who recommended 1st VW parts for a cheaper source for getting the part, with shipping $67.40
Also to McDonald Audi Body Shop for basic removal advice.
Install is pretty straight forward, but does require some care as potential for paint damage is a risk. Took me about 90 minutes, including a 15 minute rain delay.
Requires basic tools:
Wide Masking Tape
2 slotted screwdrivers
razor blade
warm soapy water
rubbing alcohol
heat gun
body color touch up paint
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/82884/dsc00227.jpg">
This is the original trim, though not a great picture, you can see the oxidation on the trim strip
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/82884/dsc00228.jpg">
Hence the masking tape, go at least 2 or 3 layers thick, as you will be prying against it.
IMPORTANT NOTE: WHEN REMOVING TRIM, DO NOT PRY FROM TOP DOWN. ONLY FROM BOTTOM UP AND USE THE TAPED AREA TO PROTECT THE PAINT
<IMG SRC="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/82884/dsc00229.jpg">
Start from either end and gently pry up the trim, you should be able to get some initial seperation just from your fingers, the be able to put the screwdriver blade through.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/82884/dsc00230.jpg">
Slowly and carefully work the screwdriver across, lifting a couple of inches at a time. A heat gun definetly helps in this as it will heat the glue tape and allow it to also lift from the body with the trim.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/82884/dsc00231.jpg">
Old trim and new trim. The old trim will bend and straighten as it comes off
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/82884/dsc00232.jpg">
Backside of new trim, white covering is to be removed to expose the tape strip, the plastic clips are also visible
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/82884/dsc00233.jpg">
This is what it looks like after the trim was removed, and hence the reason for the razor blade. You will have to gently scrape this old tape off, a heat gun helps, but this takes the longest of the whole procedure. It wil be helpful when done to have some touch up paint, as you will probably scrape some of the paint also. Even though it is hidden, touch is still a good idea
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/82884/dsc00234.jpg">
The finished project, yeah its a little darker, had to move the car into the garage out of the rain. I alos removed the dealer badging, and gave the rim a coat of Nevr Dull polish.
