Default My new ride

Ordered October 20. Arrived in San Diego January 29. Arrived at dealer Feb 7. Picked up Feb 10. Car was exactly as ordered: A6 2.7T, Tip, Melange/Melange, Prem, Pref, Cold, Bose, Shades, Rear bags. 8 miles on the odometer.

Modifications:
- Adjusted brake lights (had to push pedal too far before lights came on)
- Adjusted headlights (were too low)
- Installed Splash Guards (ordered from Clair) with 3M Scotchguard paint protectant film applied to body where the splash guards contact the paint.
- Installed CD Changer (ordered from Clair)
- Installed new 17" wheels/tires (17 x 8 BBS RK Polished w/ BFG g-Force KDWS 235/45R17 tires) ordered from the Tirerack.
- Wheel center decals made by Mike Green[mikeg@rennlist.com] (carbon fiber look background with silver Audi rings.)

Problems to Date:
Rear window shade refused to go up. Magically fixed itself.

Autodimming mirrors dim too much. Put a piece of clear Scotch tape over the sensor in the rear view mirror. Cannot really see the tape, but it shades the sensor just enough to reduce the dimming to an acceptable level. Not a great fix, but it marginally works for now.

When driving with the sunroof open, I occasionally hear what sounds like a piece of paper or a leaf flapping in the breeze. It is intermittent and not real loud. Cannot see anything that it might be.

Some creaking from the drivers A-pilliar when the car is cold (25 deg F).

Dealer comments:
Purchased car through Premier Motorcar in Albuquerque, NM. They only sell Porshe/Mercedes/Audi. They indicated when I ordered the car it would be 3-4 months for delivery (it took about 3.5 months). They actually ordered the car to my specs before I ever agreed to purchase the car. The salesman wanted to get the car in the que, and if I did not want it, they would just sell it to someone else. The salesman gave me regular updates on the status of the car and called me a few days later to see if everything was going well. The customer relations rep for the dealership also called me to see if there were any issues after I had the car for a few days. The only issue I had with the delivery of the car is the wax job could have been a little better (not much of a gripe really). Paid $1900 over invoice (not a screaming deal, but not too bad considering they are the are the only Audi dealer for 400 miles). My original offer was $1000 over invoice, which they politely declined and I walk away for a week. At that point, the car was already ordered, but there was no pressure to buy the car (other then by myself knowing that someone else may be driving my car in 3 months). Upon delivery, the tank was full of gas and the front license plate bracket was tossed in the trunk (as requested). Have not yet tested out the service department. Salesman gave me a tour of the service department and I spoke to the service manager about what type of oil they use, etc. Audi will only pay for standard (fossil) oil which will be 5W-30 Quaker State, but he did suggest bringing in my own Mobile 1 0W-30 and they would use it. The dealership promises a loaner car for service/repair, and if they are out of loaners, they claim they will rent me one. Have yet to test this out either, but I have no reason to doubt them at this point. Overall, I have no complaints about how I was treated or how the dealership took care of me. Hopefully I will still feel this way in 4 years.

Typically reported problems/issues:
- Headlights too low: had the problem; adjusted them myself.
- Brake lights not coming on soon enough: had the problem; adjusted them myself.
- Radio drift: have not seen.
- Windshield distortion: cannot not see any.
- Fuel Sensor: seems to be working fine.
- Brake Rotor Warping: none yet.
- Broken plastic lug bolt alignment pin: did not use when I swapped the wheels; made my own out of a 14mm x 1.5 steel bolt from a hardware store. Worked like a charm. Cost me $1.50 and 30 minutes on a grinder.
- Brake Dust: it's everywhere.
- Steering Wheel Radio Buttons: They seek rather that scan the presets. I'll reiterate previous complaints on this.
- Noises: Drivers A-pillar at low temps. Paper flapping noise when sun roof is open.

Fit and finish:
- The interior cabin is great. Have not found any problems other then the A-pillar creak.

- The right rear fender well liner seems to be installed a little off. It is not noticeable externally, but I could see it when I installed the splash guards. Not much of an issue.

- The door that covers the tool kit/CD changer compartment does not close as easily as it should. The carpet is not glued to the plastic at the top of the hole, so the plastic fingers on the removable door were slipping between the carpet and the plastic liner rather than behind the plastic. I got it to work, but will probably have the dealer take a look at the 5K service.

- Found some minor imperfections in the paint.

After 1100 miles, I have not been able to detect any oil usage.

The car is amazing to drive. 95mph seems like 65mph. 65mph seems like such a waste.

Crack a window when the sun roof is open and the noise will go away.

Default Audi delivery inspection/checklist

Thanks for the report, sounds great! (Looks great!)

Does anyone have more feedback for things to look for on the day of delivery?

I'm "expecting" soon (4.2 w/ all packages except telephone), and am beginning a list of things to look for and ask the dealer for/about.

Thanks for the feedback.

I went the silver paint route. The polished look good.

I ordered them from Mike Green [mikeg@rennlist.com]. E-mail him, and I'm sure he would be happy to sell you a set.

They are decals that go over the BBS center piece. I did not remove anything from the wheel. The decal can be removed and the wheel will look original again. I cleaned the BBS piece with alcohol before applying the decal to get rid of anything that would prevent the decal from sticking well.

The picture shows how the decals come.

Default Re: My new ride

Congrats.....I have the same ride with many of the same mods. But I have also had some of the problems you listed as well.

I do have the issue with the tail lights delay and issue of headlight aiming too low. Can you give me some instructions on adjusting them both myself.

Thanks

Default How to adjust brake lights and headlights

Here is what I did. Try this at your own risk and check to make sure everything still works when you are done.

For the headlights, there is a white plastic adjustment screw at the top, rear of each headlight. It is has a female hex top (6mm if I remember correctly) on the screw, and it drives another gear that you can see external to the headlight. Before I ever turned anything, I marked the two gears with a felt tip pen so I could put them back to the original position if needed, plus be able to tell how much I had adjust them. I put the car in the garage and marked the wall with some tape so I could see which way the headlights moved. I am not near the car right now, but if I remember correctly, turning the hex head gear counter-clockwise raises the headlight (check this by watching the light pattern move against a wall). I turned each side up one turn of the hex head gear which was about 2/5 of a turn on the other gear connected to it. This seems to greatly improve the headlight funtion and I have not been flashed or pulled over.

Adjusting the brake lights is a little more difficult because of the switch location. There is a switch that has a plunger the contacts the front (front being side the driver sits on, not the firewall side) of the brake pedal arm. The best way I could see it is to rotate the steering wheel all the way up and look through the gap below the steering column. The switch is made of white plastic, has 4 wire coming out of the back, and is mounted through a hole in a mounting bracket (this is what the switch looks like for a TIPTRONIC, it may be different or only have 2 wires for a 6-speed). The treaded shaft of the switch has some sort of spring loaded nut that turns when you turn the switch, but there are metal tabs that stick out of this nut. I was able to get a screw driver up under the dash to hold the nut in place and then turn the switch body counter clockwise to back the switch away from the brake petal shaft. You have to block the nut with the screwdriver, turn the shaft about a quarter turn, move the screwdriver, turn the shaft back (the nut should turn with the shaft), and then repeat. This keeps the wires at the back of the switch from getting twisted up. You need to do this a little at time to get what you want. My car is a tiptronic, so I was able to set the switch so that just a little petal pressure releases the shift interlock, and then a little more pressure makes the brake lights come on. The lights come on before the brakes start to grab. If you adjust the switch too far, then the shift interlock will never engage (not sure if the computer will read this and reduce engine power or something else strange), or worse your brake lights will be on all of the time. The switch is difficult to reach, and it took me about 30 minutes to find it and figure out how to get my hands to it without riping the dash apart. Once I was able to start adjusting it, it only took about 10 minutes of adjusting and testing to get what I wanted.

Hope this helps,
Brian
