I did the brushed aluminum for my shifter plate...
very easy mod. Plus, I will spare you the trouble of searching the archives.
First, you need to remove the wood trim around the shifter. Simply lift up the rear edge of the trim piece (it just snaps off) but only lift about a 1/2 inch or so. Once loose, slide toward rear of car (there are two large tabs that hold in the front under the ashtray).
Second, you need to remove the shifter ****. If you are tiptronic pre-2002 like me, shift into 3rd (obviously with car not running). Then use a plastic putty knife to pry the chrome ring under the shifter **** down. Careful not to scratch the metal. Then pull the shifter button out until you feel a gap on the bottom of the button, and pull the **** off. Don't let the button go yet, it springs back in and is a bitch to get back out, although not impossible. You can wedge something in the gap to prevent it from sprining back in while you have it off of the car. If you are 2002+ or manual...I do not have my Bentley manual handy...sorry
To remove the metal bezel, there are four tabs that hold it in (two on each side). Carefully release these tabs (they are very fragile) and remove the metal bezel. This should seperate from the electronics underneath.
Now, you are ready to rock! Using a sanding block, start with 150 grit to remove the shiny part of the metal. Sand un the lengthwise direction only, and keep your pressure even. Once the shiny finish is gone, switch to 220 grit, and sand again lengthwise. Once you are happy with the uniform surface, switch to 330 grit, and sand yet again to get that brushed look.

When you are done, it should look like this (note that the sides as well as the inside edges are still shiny). All you need to do is reinstall everything in your car, metal bezel, shift ****, wood trim, then enjoy the look! You can always touch up any future blemishes with steel wool.
