Navigation Unit Replacement

Navigation Unit Replacement
While traveling north this past week I had to change cd's for the navigation system. The CD must have been scratched because the system did not recognize the CD. After numerous attempts I could not remove the CD from the unit. I took it to two dealerships in New England and they both said that the unit would need to be replaced at about a $1000.00. I have looked on e-bay for a replacement but could not find one. Any other suggestions. I pulled the unit out this weekend and will be taking it to a local car stereo shop for their evaluation.

Can you give us more details?
What year is your A6?
Is this C-navi...or D-navi (check the map disks for clarification)?
Is this US-based Navi...or Nav+?
What is the release date of your CD's?
FYI - I always see these Nav drives (US-based) on ebaymotors.com....keep looking.
Some times, you have to reinsert the CD numerous times
FYI - the CD drive is built by Blaupunkt. You could probably send it to midwestelectronics.com to have them evaluate it. Maybe the laser needs realligning etc.

As a last resort you can use toothpaste and a old toothbrush and that can get out the scratch...
make circular motions on the back of the disk (area where scratch is) and this should minimize the damage. It works for my cd's. I saw this on channel 5.

First try cleaning the laser and loading/unloading mechanism.
It is VERY common for these to get dirty, causing the unit to stop reading CDs. All you need is a straight blade screwdriver, a small phillips screw driver (00), a tweezer and some isopropyl alcohol and a foam (or cotton) swab.
Cleaning procedure:
1. Remove the top of the nav unit (carefully pry it up with the straight blade screwdriver)
2. Carefully remove the phillips screw holding the center spindle assembly to the CD drive frame. (It is obvious when you see it.) Make sure you note how this goes together.
3. Wipe off the laser lens with the isopropyl soaked swab.
4. Clean the loading rollers. This may take several swabs, and you may need to remove the front cover to get better access to them.
5. Reassemble and try it out.
I've used this procedure on two small Nav drives, and three Nav + systems with CD loading/reading problems. Each one was VERY dirty and worked fine afterwards. YMMV of course.
Oh, and if the CD is stuck in the unit, first remove the top cover, then reconnect it to the wiring in the car. You can "help" the mechanism eject the disk by _lightly_ pushing toward the front of the unit (unload direction) on a tab on the right side of the unit, about half way back.
I will post up some pictures today if I have a chance to open up a Nav unit. That will make it crystal clear.

Re: First try cleaning the laser and loading/unloading mechanism.
I should have mentioned in the original post that the cd won't release from the unit. I will try your suggestion this evening. Any pictures would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.
