Quick write up. Change Cup Holder to Card Holder or vice versa...
Forum member gietl was looking for a cup holder to replace his card holder. I was looking for a card holder to hold my iPod Mini. A fine opportunity for a trade.
I know there is a write up somewhere but figured I'd add to the archives just to make it a little easier for anyone who was interested in this mod.
First step is to remove the plastic, wood or Carbon trim piece. The best place to start is on the bottom left side, between the trim and the dash. Take a small flat head screw driver, I used one from a pocket knife and wedge it in between and apply slight pressure until it pops out of place. Then, over to the right bottom side and do the same. Now the trim is loose enough from the bottom that you can take both hands and wedge your fingers underneath and pull, ever so slightly outward until the 6 mounting tabs break loose. <font color="red">Do not attempt to pry one side off or you will break either the trim or the tabs which secure it</font>.
The cup/card holder is now exposed.
There are two mounting tabs which secure the cup/card holder to the dash. They are located on the top left and right of the holder. Using the same screwdriver, starting on the left side press downward on the slotted tab and wiggle the holder loose, then again to the right side and it will slide out.
<font color="red">There is an electrical plug that attaches to the back of the assembly so don't yank the assembly out or you might dammage the cord.</font> By hand you can disconnect the plug which is responsible for providing power to the little icon that illuminates red when your lights are on.
Now everything is loose and you are ready to reattach the cup/card holder.
Reverse the steps, first plug in the power plug and turn your lights on to make sure it is properly connected. Then its just a simple matter of plug and play. Slot back in the assmebly <b>snap</b>, put your plastic, wood or Carbon trim back on <b>snap</b> and violla!
You are done.
My plan is to turn the card holder into a dock for the iPod Mini, since it fits perfectly in the card holder, with the ability to close it, allowing for seamless integration and the ability to control the unit from the stearing wheel controlls, while displaying the track names on the center dash and radio display (time will tell).
No need for a Phatbox.
I' might install dual 15's in a single box with a 1,000 watt Amp this weekend sine I have used my trunk twice in 2 1/2 years and need that ((((<b>BOOM</b>)))) the BoseŽ system can't seem to provide. Initially I was going to do one 12 or one 15 but met a gentleman at the car wash this weekend who said, why max out one speaker when you can have two and use them at 50%-75%, allowing for a better sounding bass, without taxing the system. Made sense to me and the sound was phenominal in his Jetta.
Opinions?

a single 12 will give you enough.. i recommend a JLW7 and an Xtant amp.
splice into the rear speakers... mmmm.. (((BOOOOM)))...if you don't care for the spare.. use the spare well as a "box" and mount the sub onto a plexiglass platform cut out to the trunk mat.. throw the amp in there too.. neon light it or carbon fiber some trim for it.

Thats OK, you have three up top which will suffice.
There are only 2 on the ash tray cover and I broke one when I pulled off the wood trim for the Carbon. It still holds just the same. I think they made multiple tabs for this very reason, as a back up, ya know?
The cup holder will be there tomorrow, thanks again.
