Looking for suggestions on a shifter plate mod/touchup.....
Hi AWers,
I have noticed (through the search function) that many people seem to get a number of scratches on the plastic plate surrounding the shifter on the automatic A6, and I am no exception. When I bought my used A6 just 8 months ago, I figured that this was no big deal, that I would just have that particular piece replaced. Lo and behold, this piece is apparently attached to the Tip. mechanics, and costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $250 to replace.....not impossible, but certainly more than I was looking to spend for a touch up job.
SO, to get to the point, I have recently been thinking about sanding down the chrome look paint on the shifter plate and recoating it with something else. If the plate were actually metal, I could simply brush the metal for that cool aluminum look, but alas.....
I am wondering if anyone has tried such a touch up on this part, and what type of paint/recoating surface did you use. I am thinking that I could find a decent little chrome plating color at a model shop or some crafts store, but if there are better ideas/solutions, I'd love to hear them now.
Thanks for your time!
Regards,
Chris

No help, but I have been thinking about the same thing.
My plate is probably on the better side of average for scratches for a 2000 model, but I know what you are speaking about as far as not being able to replace the cover by itself.
I think a refurbishment is very doable. Masking off the ovals, etc. and coating with a durable paint.
WTH, if it stratches down the line, you could just pop it out and do it over.

You should be able to get the part seperately
I've seen the plate at my dealer for about $45....and on the A6 you can get to the top of the shifter to remove it without pulling the whole console from my understanding....see Herve's write up on doing the tiptronic steering wheel mod.
You just pull the shifter **** off, then pop the four brown tabs (2 on each side), lift it off and disconnect the electrical connectors you see on the side of the shifter and put the new one on.

How exactly is the shifter **** on? I was looking for screws, none. I was looking to unscrew it, no go for obvious reasons...I am not mechanically inclined to figure this kind of thing out. Can anyone tell me how it 'pop's off?
