For those with ESP and other buttons, I believe you could move those over to the cupholder slot and still set it up this way.
The nice things about this location are:
1. It is not visible from behind at all
2. The mute button is within quick reach
3. No expensive parts were modified in this install (replacment of the black plastic would be required, that's all)
4. It is still within eye's notice if you have the volume turned down. It is easily within your peripheral focus while looking down the road.
5. It does not block the view or use of anything else.
I'm pleased with it.
I did have to grind down the edges of the V1 display a touch, and I also ground a couple mm's off the 'blank' switch to make it all work. A little epoxy to hold it all together, and everything's done!

I don't want anyone, cop especially, to see the thing all lit up from behind. Sure to get a ticket
if he sees you have anti-cop technology. No brakes then, whatsoever. Also, if he notes it on the ticket, no brakes from the judge either, most likely.
Makes no difference whether it's legal or not.
For the record, I was busted with this setup (laser) at night and the officer never noticed any of the equipment.

Not the enlightened part(s) of Canada - Alberta :-)
The interesting part is that in places where they are legal the cops use instant on radar, which is hard to avoid. In places like Saskachewan and Manitoba they are lazy and just leave their radar on, most of the time and they are easy to find.
