Impressions of the Miltek Downpipes with the Miltek Exhaust
After driving around for 2 weeks now, I have come to the conclusion: I don't have a final answer yet!!! : ) .
I have had the Miltek Exhaust for ~2 years. It was a good mod, sound wise. From the outside it was almost `stock like' quiet, and at WOT you could just tell that something different was there, it sounded better. Inside the car it was a little louder, but still comfortable. Just had a nice meaner sound to it, inside the car. The looks, I wasn't too thrilled because the Tips were angled down to clear the old style bumper. But that's a different story.
I purchased the Miltek Downpipes and they were installed 2 weeks ago. I had heard the car before, with hollowed out precat (stock downpipes) and the sound both inside and outside was not bad. Also at that time, there was no tiny exhaust leak at the sleeves. You could hear the turbos spooling a little more and an air rushing sound since it was freeier flowing.
With the Miltek DP's, you also can hear the turbos spooling. But,,, the exhaust note is louder. I do have a pretty good size leak where the sleeve joins the DP and Exhaust. That will be fixed in the next 2 weeks. I am hoping this leak, which is located just under the driver seat area, is causing the excess noise I hear. At idle you can hear the air sputtering from that area. In it current condition this is at the max edge of my listening pleasure when the throttle is applied. Inside the cabin its loud, darn thing sounds like a V8 ALMS Vette, well OK maybe not that loud but you get the picture : ). Maybe I can take a video(since the mic is real sensitive).
After I get the sleeve properly fitted, then I will be able to give my final conclusion. Since the leak is right where I am sitting I believe it is a major culprit to the noise levels.
Performance wise, boy it sure does make a difference, turbo spool up much quicker, and you don't have that heat build up right behind the turbos as you do with stock DP's. The car is more responsive to throttle input. A lot more..
A cool thing I have noticed, if you are anywhere with walls to bounce sound back, and your idling along and then give it a little gas, boy, people actually turn their heads to see what caused that Turbo/supercharger whine combined with a throaty sound. They have this look like, ohhhh, I don't think that car is stock. Also due to the leak, sometimes when you release the gas, the exhaust note will pop, pop, pop. Will try to get a sound clip up this weekend.

NO, no, no, this was purchased and documented before I made 'the bet I will win'
Nice try. Oh and when I win, you have to drive down here and pay at the Chipotle near my house!
And they don't have Chili Werdo Burritos either ! : ))
And did you go to Laguna Seca?

I don't remember saying anything about 'purchasing' a mod, All I remember is (edited)
saying is you couldn't go 9 month without out modding your car. ;-) Me's thinks you should have read the fine print in the contract (tee hee)! You set the items that didn't count!
Hey, are you running your resonators? I took them off of mine to save a little weight and get a touch more noise. Sounds like another great mod. I gotta get me a set of downpipes.

I have included the link for your study! ;-)

the tunnel by LAX on Sepulveda is one of the best places in LA to get that 'off the wall' sound...
open the sunroof + windows..get in the left lane...and floor it.
a perfect smile everytime.

I have had the total Milltek System for a long time ...
and it is great, IMHO.
The only thing with the Milltek systems is exactly what you described - LEAKS! Usually, it takes a second look at the install and some exhaust paste to close everything up.
i love the system, and frequently get compliments on the "sound" of my A6. Of course, i always tell people me car is stock...LOL
This 20th, I am installing the AWE Stage III Clutch, Lightweight Flywheel, and AWE/McNiell Competition Intercoolers. Should be GREAT!
