Rattling noise on 4.2, at idle when cold or at very low speed when cold (more) ...
This is a very loud metal sound. As if metal is vibrating and hitting metal.
Sounds exactly like a loose heat shield noise I once had in my Chevrolet. However I am not sure it is not engine related.
Anyone experience this before?
Thanks

Does it sound like metallic rocks? If so, it's the hydraulic ATF pump cavitating
You need to get the fluid and filter changed on the tranny right away.
The filter is dropping too much pressure and reducing the net positive suction head available to the pump to less than minimum net positive suction head required to prevent caviatation.
Therefore, change the filter, it will reduce the pressure drop and fix your problem when the fluid is cold and has a high viscosity.

I thought mine (on my '01 4.2) was a heat shield...until I went under there...
and jiggled the cat (or just let the engine idle)...it's pretty clear where it is coming from when you have your head under there.
I know someone just said below somewhere about the dealer wanting $2k for a cat...I don't think so...I think I saw my invoice that the dealer was billing Audi...and it was something like $750.

Might still be under warranty? Cats are 80K instead of 50
at least on my '01. Check your warranty book, not sure if the 4 years are extended for emissions though.

This just happened to me. I'm a '99 Avant and I heard the same...
noise you are describing. Finman is correct, if you get down there (in the ice & snow - yuk) it is obvious where the sound is coming from. My stealer replaced the driver's side cat to the tune of $1200. Then when I posted my tale of woe, I learned through this venerable forum that the cats are covered by a 10 year federal warranty....so back to the stealer I go, call 'em on it and they refund my cabbage. Sounds like a slam dunk for you.
