The source of my oil leaks
Well I think I found out why my car is leaking oil like a sieve all of a sudden. Apparently they have an oil breather valve that can become clogged and frozen in cold weather. This causes a build of pressure and the ultimate failure of the cam seals and valve cover gaskets. Thanks Audi for the great design.

Re: The source of my oil leaks
I wonder if this is what is causing my oil leak. Took it in for an oil change this weekend (had smelled oil for a couple of days before so I added a quart thinking it was just low) and was told I had a valve gasket problem which would require 10 hours of labor and $1200 to fix. I called my extended warranty people and found out it was covered, thank God! They are also going to cover my faulty engine coolant temperature sensor (another $225).
So now that I'll have upgraded brakes (Zimmerman's) and all this work done it should be good to go.
If anyone has bought a used Audi (I have a 99 A6 Q w/ 2.8) and is looking for an extended warranty provider, so far I recommend Warranty By Net.

Fred, a word of advice....
...your dealer sucks. I'm going to strongly suggest you never have a car w/o warranty around that dealer.
10 hours of labor for the VCG's is a joke. Maybe on a 2.7T but not on a 2.8. Also, the coolant sensor cost $15 and take 10 minutes to change. STAY AWAY!!

The parts from the dealer are about $45 per side....
...and a 2.8 could be done in 2 hours per side. So if you figure $100/hr dealer rate (high, I know). I would say around $500 for both seems like a "better" price from a dealer, still high. Worst case I would say $600.
For $1200 they have to be changing a cam adjuster. There's just no way that's for VCG's only.
Of course, one could wait until it warms up and buy the parts online for $60 and install them yourself. Then save $400-500.

I think I wrote the article you are referring to......
That was written for a 2.7T, which is a completely different animal than the 2.8. With a 2.7T it can easily take 4 hours EACH SIDE the first time you do it. In my article I didn't write 3 hours tops anywhere, espicially for both sides.
The 2.8 is more like the article for the 4.2 that Paul wrote. Much easier!!
