Default 2000 a6 4.2 with check engine light problem

recently purchased 4.2 and shortly after check engine light came on. Dealer said it was due to air cleaner being clogged. I replaced with k&n which took care of the problem for a week but now on again. According to last owner he had the recurring problem after car was rear ended but never had it diagnosed since it was end of lease. Any ideas of what it could be or what I could do to keep it from coming on? Very annoying at night.

Default My 2000 4.2 has it's check engine light on.....

most of the time in the winter. Dealer has checked it out and the only short term cure was a new mass air flow sensor. Light will still come on from time to time. I was told not to get concerned unless it flashes. I have been driving it for three years and no problems to date. GREAT CAR.

Yeah, a small air leak can cause the CEL to come on.

Default Winter time, cold weather, does it happen...

within the first few minutes of start up? If so, my guess is the secondary air pump, insufficient air. That's what the VAG tool pegged mine as and that's what my Audi dealer said trips the CEL more than anything else they've seen in the cold weather.
