Default Re: Catalytic converter .....

I'm going to make a call right now...my guess is that is not covered, but then again cars destined for the Northeast have the same emission controls (and inspection standards) as CA. Thanks for the heads-up. I'll post a follow-up to let all know the outcome.

Default I'm weighing AAA (inclusionary, less $) vs. WarrantyDirect (Exclusionary, more $$)

for my '01 Avant w/ 39-40k, AAA is ~$1,750, but it only covers listed items. They say they've used their underwriter for 12 yrs. It will cover for 3 yrs. past factory warranty or ~80k miles.

WarrantyDirect is ~$2,500 for zero deductible ($2,300 for $100 deduct.) but it's exclusionary, more comprehensive coverage. It covers up to 100k miles.

My sense is that the longer mileage coverage (which I will use) and the more comprehensive coverage of WarrantyDirect may be a better choice, tho' I agree AAA should --- should --- be a safe bet (warrantydirect has a very good rep too from reports around here).

Good luck, either way yours is costing a lot of $$$.

best,
Jon

Default I bought a '00 4.2 w/ 25k miles on it 4 months ago.......

No major repairs yet other than brakes, broken windshield, etc. I did however purchase an ext. warranty from WarrantyByNet.com because I plan on keeping the car for several years and I got a great deal on it - 5yr/100k miles bumper to bumper (exclusionary) for $1600 w/ $100 deductable. I couldn't pass up the deal. It was so cheap because of the low mileage and the 4.2 is pretty reliable.

Default

Just put $200/month away as a repair fund, and hope for the best.

Default Chah-ching!

Charley you are the man! Your post just saved me +$1000. Thank you. Interesting that my query to the dealer prompted a return call from the service manager who apologized for the 'oversight'...wonder how many cats have gotten swapped out with no mention of a emissions warranty (12 year - federal mandate). Can I send you a couple of lobsters or something?

Sounds sweet....I lust after a 4.2 myself. Sounds like you scored on the warranty too. I've learned a lot about Audis with this car (previous cars: '72 BMW 2002; '74 VW Karmann-Ghia; '78 VW Westie; '84 MB 300TD). Present stable mate to A6: '98 Jetta GLX. I love the marque and hope to have this for a while. If I can get ahead of the repair costs, I'd love to add amber tails, allroad door trim and a set of Avus 17"-ers

Sounds like sound logic to me. I plan on keeping mine past 100K as well. I'm gonna check out WarrantyDirect as well.....but the 'repair fund' idea is also looking good as I have taken the big hits already. If you check out the post below from Charley.....he turned me on to the fact that a catalytic converter failure before 80K/12 years is covered under the federal emmissions warranty. So the dealer is crediting my Visa to the tune of +$1000.

Sounds like your service & repair fund already has $1000 in it. : )

Default Cool... in your situation I think the repair fund makes more sense...

odds of your need to refix the fixes already done are low.... good luck,
Jon

Default Warranty is partly to cover big items (trans, engine), like medical disaster coverage.

A repair fund doesn't protect you against the large, "outlier" losses.
