tires: hung up on which tires to get.

Don't confuse the old db with the new ones. They are quite different.
If you look at the tread patters and read about the new engineering I believe that the feathering probles have been addressed. I had the old db and I agree with you on these. I had them replaced, for free, at 12,000 km.

Seconded.
I put a set of MPS A/Ss on the A8 in June, right before a trip to FL (Naples). Spent a lot of time at 80mph on I-75 in a medium rain (lo wiper setting), and these tires are *incredible* in the wet.

I haven't driven them on my Audi, but I've tried a considerable number of max and high performance tires on my other cars, and the best tires I've had are defintely Firestone Firehawk SZ-50. Great grip in wet or dry. Will probably put hem on my car when I've run through the Dunlop SP9090's that came with my car.

I can verify that assessment
I'm running HTR+'s right now... they're loud enough to make you think a wheel bearing has gone bad, and they're wearing funny on the front. Ok, maybe wearing funny is a bit extreme, but it appears that my PSK bar testing is ******** the hell out of the front left tire.
I won't be replacing these tires with HTR+'s, that's for sure.

Same problem here, but on the less full sport end...
I have Goodyear Eagle RS-As on my '01 Avant, time for new tires.
They are OK, not great. I have winter tires so want a performance all season (for rain performance), and it seems at Tire Rack user reviews everyone has problems of one kind or another with my choices, such as Bridgestone RE950s, RE92s, Yoko Avid H4 or V4, or Dunlop A2s.
It's freakin' impossible to choose. I don't want to spend much more than $100/tire out the door, so the $200 super performance tires aren't in my pocketbook.
Any suggestions based on experience?
Thx,
Jon
