Default CV Boot Replacement on '98 A6 2.8 - SUCCESS!

Yesterday I replaced my CV boots using Andy TN's Tech fine article 'CV Joint/Boot Repair'. While the article was a great help (particularly the pictures) the procedure was written for an A4 and some different tools were needed for my A6.

Specificallly, the hub bolt needed a 17mm hex drive and the bolts that held the half shaft to the transmission needed a 10mm star drive or aka triple square drive. We found it much easier to remove the half shaft than to work on the CV joint while it was still on the car.

The Bentley Service Manual says that the hub bolt needs to be torqued to 190Nm and the transmission bolts need 70Nm.

AndyTN suggested that if don't have a factory tool you should 'be creative' when crimping the boot clamp, but I was able to find a CV clamping tool at an Advanced Auto Parts store for $10. It made a professional looking crimp on the clamp and was worth the price for the piece of mind.

The CV boot kit was mail ordered through Zygmunt Motors (tel 215-348-3263). The P/N is K6010-40246 and contained a new hub bolt, clamps, snap ring, concave washer, rubber CV boot and a tube of high temp grease for about $22.50.

AndyTN estimated that it would take 1-2 hours to complete the job. That is probably about right, but it took me longer because the bolt that holds the control links to the hub carrier was seized from rust on both sides of the car. It took and extra hour each side to free these bolts. This was the least fun part of the job. Also, you should know that this is a very messy job. I felt like I had grease up to my arm pits!

I thought this might help the next person to replace their CV boots on an A6.

Default It is a filthy job...

That, and the need to be sure no grit gets in there w/ the grease, is why I let my friend/tech do this when needed (none yet on my A6).

best,
Jon

Hey Boulder, I have a 2000 A6 4.2 Quattro and was thinking about replacing the outer boots this weekend. Can you think of anything else that might be different that I should look for or that you would recommend?
