Looking for more exhaust system mods....
the 2.7t's fellas are always mentioning downpipes....are the downpipes akin to 'headers'? A different type of exhaust manifold/collector or something?
Downpipes are for turbo'ed cars right?
Anyway, I was thinking about some highflow cats (what aspects of warranty would I be voluntarily voiding?), and maybe something better in terms of exhaust collection on the 4.2. Dare I mention 'headers', but I come from the land of 5.0 Mustangs and equal length shorty headers, so is there some type of header for more power gains?
Just wondering.

well...
i've not heard of anyone putting headers on the 4.2, but i could be wrong.
downpipe's are indeed for turbo-charged cars, mostly put in place replacing pre-cats.
i'm more tempted to start modifying the exhaust side of my car now too, just can't make my mind over Miltek or doin' Magnaflow's like you. from what i've heard (incl. from you), i know that i'd be sure to feel some better throttle response.
once i start modding, i won't stop... that's why my car's been pretty stock up 'til now.
the rear bumper was replaced/fixed & now look like brand new... i opted not to go w/ '02-03 b/c they were giving me hassle & i said ok... whatever.
nonetheless, alot of rambling... just wanted to say HI haha...

Until PES comes out with a supercharger kit I wouldn't bother with engine mods..
there just isn't anything available for the motor that would make any real difference. A supercharger kit with intercooler could do wonders for that car.

I am going the route of Gecko with the Magnaflow Oval tips...
and having the rear panel cut to match the oval shape of the tips.
Exhaust mods - the Miltek is supposed to be pretty damn good.
The easiest exhaust mod and cheapest is to remove the C/R. Car does not get noticeably louder if you still have the stock mufflers in. If you replace the mufflers and remove the C/R, its getts rambunctious.
My wife is not too keen with the C/R not being in there. So I am putting in hi flow C/R's from Magnaflow to tone down the exhaust a bit, but there's no way I'm putting back in the stock c/r as that thing severly pinched the exhaust.

Too bad Kgnast I think your on the right track looking for..
...headers that would be a great mod for the 4.2. Headers, high flow cat and mandrel bent system would give a 5.0 Mustang what 20-40HP. It should do the same for the 4.2L. The shortage of real mods for the 4.2 is one reason I went for the 2.7T. It seems like there would be a market for some 4.2 mods that added some decent HP. Good luck keep up the search!

C/R = Center Resonator...
Never had the car dynoed with the resonator out, but I dropped from a 15.1 stock to a 14.39 best buy removing it.
I am sure there were other considerations (cool&dry weather, 42psi inflation, 2 gallons of 100 octane on a 1/4 tank) at play as well, but I'd say an easy .2-3 improvement alone thru the 1/4. 1/4 mile times were about 1 month apart.

Thanx Rocco. Just as a side note, right around the corner from the dealership....
where I work, we have a place called Rocco's, and I order from there at least 3 times a week. : )
