Default New steering wheel with tiptronic rocker switches !

hi,
I changed my multifunction steering wheel with the sportswheel with TT switches.

I found a instruction here on the archive, written by Herve. Many Thanks. Without this instruction I would have never tried it.

Except some differences in the wiring (my A6 is 2002, his one 1999) everything worked like in his instruction.

So far i only have to deal with some ABS/ESP errors after the change. Hope i get it solved.

I am reading errors 01044-Control modul incorrectly coded (gues because if the old multifunction wheel)
and error 00778-Steering angle sensor G85 66-10-not matched.....

As soon I got it solved I will post again.

Default Glad it helped. Regarding the DTCs:

Bentley's Publisher CD (which I recommend buying) says:

First DTC:

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/6485/dtc01044.jpg">

It seems to be related to the airbags, not ABS. Don't you also have the airbag light on ? Note the actual coding of your airbag module and compare with the coding table below. I think your airbag module does not see all the airbags it was coded for, like the one in your steering wheel, for instance ? Are the connections ok (I know it is obvious, just asking :-) ?

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/6485/coding_airbag.jpg">

Second DTC: I could not find it, but I only printed up to m.y. 2000. I will check tonight if there is a section for m.y. 2001 and beyond. However, could it be that the steering sensor (in the steering wheel) is not connected ?

HTH

Thanks for your help,
I checked all connectors, everything alright, I reseated them also.

No, I dont have any fault indication for the airbags. Everything looks normal. I did not check with VAGCOM, but the airbag warning indication in the instrument is normal, so far.

Do you know which channel I have to read out to get the airbagcodes you asked me to compare?

Thanks

@Hy Octane,
I have a 2002 TDI with Multitronic. The multitronic does not have any tip buttons, only in tiptronic-mode I could shift manually, but only in the "normal" way like with the "normal" tiptronic.

Now I can also change gears from the steering wheel.

I would like to buy the cd-rom from bentley. the major problem is they don't offer the version for the TDI Modell (I have the 2.5L V6 TDI).

Default Re: your dealer telling you to adapt the steering angle sensor

You mentionned this on a email. Here is the Bentley procedure. I agree the TDI is not listed when you need to login according to engine type, but it is worth having a look. Besides, the adaptation porcedure is not engine-type related.

DTC 01044
Possible cause: "Steering angle sensor -G85- is faulty" or "Zero position compensation of steering angle sensor -G85- has not been carried out. "
Corrective action: "Replace steering angle sensor -G85" or "Code ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104" and "Perform zero position compensation"

Step 1:
First read group 125, block 1. A value of 0 means the steering sensor is not seen on the CAN. You must have a 1 here.

Step 2: coding
I suppose your ABS module does not need recoding, I see no reason why it would have lost its settings. Check you current coding with

the following, but no action should be needed. Then you can adapt the angle sensor (step 3)

So, first check the coding of the ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104: with your VAG-tool, logon according to logon table:

ESP login coding table (A6)
Engine Transmission Brake caliper type (front) Login code
6-cylinder gasoline engine manual FN3 (Teves/ATE) 07595
6-cylinder gasoline engine automatic FN3 (Teves/ATE) 07597
6-cylinder gasoline engine multitronic FN3 (Teves/ATE) 07599
6 or 8-cylinder manual HP2 (dual piston caliper) 07495
6 or 8-cylinder automatic HP2 (dual piston caliper) 07497
6 or 8-cylinder multitronic HP2 (dual piston caliper) 07499

For example, if your car is a 6 cylinder with Tiptronic and the HP2 brakes (like a 2.7T), logon with 07497
Then code the module according to the following table:
ESP coding table (A6)
Engine Transmission Brake caliper type (front) Code
6-cylinder gasoline engine manual FN3 (Teves/ATE) 06295
6-cylinder gasoline engine automatic FN3 (Teves/ATE) 06297
6-cylinder gasoline engine multitronic FN3 (Teves/ATE) 06297
6 or 8-cylinder manual HP2 (dual piston brake caliper) 06395
6 or 8-cylinder automatic HP2 (dual piston brake caliper) 06397
6 or 8-cylinder multitronic HP2 (dual piston brake caliper) 06397

How to identify the brake caliper ? The FN3 uses a retaining clip, whereas the HP2 have a housing (see pictures)

Step 3: zero position adjustment

"Zero position compensation of steering angle sensor -G85- must be performed with an accuracy of 5 degrees. Zero position

compensation of steering angle sensor -G85- is necessary in the following cases:
If ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104-, steering angle sensor -G85- or the steering column are replaced,
After performing coding of ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104-.
If suspension or steering geometry is adjusted when checking wheel alignment.
If there is a code in the DTC memory of ABS control module (w/EDL) -J104- and the instructions in the DTC table require the zero

position compensation to be carried out."

"Procedure:
- Start engine.
- Turn steering wheel one turn to the right and one turn to the left.
- Perform a short road test: drive in a straight line on a level surface at a speed not higher than 20 km/h.
If the steering wheel is properly centered (road test)
- Bring the vehicle to a standstill - still keeping it in a straight line.
- Perform zero position compensation page 01-239 .
- Take care not to move the steering wheel from this point onward.
- Do not switch off the ignition."
- Login with code 40168, go to Basic Settings, group 001:it should display an Ok. Check value of current steer angle by reading group 005, block 1

Now, the ABS

Hi Hervé,

many thanks for your help.

I wanted to try the procedure but ONE question:

under step 3, the 4th instruction from the end: "perform zero position
compensation page 01-239"

I have no idea what this is??? In the things you posted, i dont see a page
01-239.

Many thanks

Interesting. Were the wires for the tip buttons already there or did you have to run them yourself

I had to run the wires. Look at the link. This was my initial guide line.
