Default Anybody put a trailer hitch and/or bike rack on rear of car?

A local store, Sports Rack Vehicle Outfitters, says that a hitch from Da'lan will work, $260 + install which may require drilling from the spare tire bay. A different model will work on our '97 A4. This 1 1/4" hitch can then hold their BVG XE bike rack (max 2 bikes on this size of hitch), $190.

Because I don't want to drill my A6, we may try the A4 instead.

An overhead rack won't work for us... my back won't like it; my wife is too short.

Default What about this... ?

Ok, not cheap, but it might save you from drilling.

Default I'd go with a hitch if I could hide it when not in use, but I haven't seen anything like that.

You are right about your back though. I'm 6'4 and there is still potential to hurt my back when I put the bikes on the roof.

Default I actually use the same hitch - made for the allroad...

You might try discussing with the techs at your dealeship, as to whether or not it can be installed on an A6. It's fitted by removing the bumper, and the impact protection structure, then replacing it with a new part...

Picture the u shaped bar going into the car, with the receiver sticking down, towards the carpet, rather than up. The metal tounge then goes into the receiver from underneath, rather than the back, like on most hitches. Then the wiring harness is a part that flips up out of sight when not in use.

I'd assume some amount of modification might be required to make this hitch work on a standard A6 - so the no drilling requirement would be defeated. On the plus side, it tows class II/III weight (depending on if one looks at US or UK specs), and is quite hidden.

Hmmm... thanks. I wonder if there is a bike rack made to fit it.

Default Yup... the rack bolts to the "draw bar", instead of the hitch ball.

I don't really know the terms... I'm just throwing out words that I've heard. =)

Here's a link to an allroad forum post - with a hitch model number. (Note, this would work on any hitch, not just the Audi allroad-specific hitch.)

hitch rack
