Windshield Crack

Windshield Crack
Big crack in the middle of the windscreen from a great big stone on the highway. Anybody had their windshield replaced on an A6? How much does it cost? I'm going to try and plug it through Safelite, hopefully it will work.

I got the windshield on my '99 A6 Avant replaced by Safelite a couple of months back...
They put in a Pilkington OEM glass -- $380.03 for the windshield, $35.00 for labor and $111.00 for the trim kit -- total of $526.03 was charged to my insurance company. No distortion, but I can already see signs of pitting from highway sandblasting...PPG glass is said to be harder, thus more resistant to pitting and chipping. You might want to request that specifically.

Had mine done by dealer today. Used own tech; didn't farm it to a glass shop...
Cost $662, IIRC. I went with the dealer for the same reasons that the dealer refuses to farm it out... you can get leaks, damage to paint or headliners and pillar liners, and perhaps other problems such as stress cracks.
In my case, I pay only my insurance deductible. I had no incentive to try a glass shop.

Re: Windshield Crack
How did you guys all had insurance pay for windshield replacement? Do you all have low deductible or is it some kind of a special provision in your insurance to cover glass replacement?
I have full coverage with $500 deductible in NJ and my policy does not mention anything about windshield replacement. Does it mean that I am pretty much on my own, or am I missing something?
P.S. Anybody knows if I can pass DMV inspection with a 10" windshield crack? What happens if I do not pass? Do they require me to have it replaced?

Full glass coverage, with zero deductible, costs me $16/yr in CT, without a doubt a bargain...
I highly doubt NJ DMV would allow your car to pass. Definitely not if the crack is anywhere near your line of sight. Best bet is to call your ins co to see what your coverage is. Hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised.

My dealer quoted me $306 for the glass plus $175 labor. I just got glass coverage through my insurance a couple of days before the incident. Would it look weird if I put in a claim immediately?
