Default Went to the dealer to reprogram my dumb remote and another dumb little product failed...(long)

...Service guy forgot to tell me that I needed to bring both remotes or the Valet key to reprogram it correctly, so I said, send down a tech to explain it to me since I drove through this mess on my lunch break. (Lunch break in Chicago's Gold Coast is a traffic ridden mess, took over an hour to go less then 5 miles from my office and back).

Tech explains, put any key in ignition (even the plastic one) turn on, (no need to crank the engine, just single turn) Get out, use other key, lock car manually, take key out of door wait for 10 seconds, hit unlock button once. Done (we'll see).

That supposed to do it. I'll try when I get home.

Meanwhile I said, you guys do car wash here right? Service guy said yeah. I asked if they use an auto jig that might scratch the wheels, he said there is a track, but its safe for the wheels. Said he'd do it for free. Thanks. Too bad it was more of a rinse. Car was OK, but the wheels still had all the brake dust they had before the wash. Oh well, it's free since he forgot to tell me to bring the other keys. I wouldnt have paid for that anyway, it was not that great. At least the wheels were not scratched.

Meanwhile, I noticed as they were pulling away that another one of thoes crappy little Christmas tree lights for the rear brake light on the deck lid was burnt out (again). Ive replaced them before so I knew what to do. Went up to parts and asked if they had them (they did not last time and had to order them) Guess it prompted an order because the parts guy said they had a couple hundred in stock. I said how much. $2.25/ea. Gimmie 5!

Car came back while I was upstairs. I asked if I could change the bulb while I was there, he said yeah, and looked happy that he didnt have to do it (and suprised that I could). Of course, when you change one, another burns out and did so three times before It was all good. Cheap little bulbs. They should use LED's in the future. Oh well, I have two left and the part# is

N-900-510-02

Just thought I'd pass it along if you needed one. Let me know if you cant figure out how to change them.

Fun! Lets hope my remote comes back to life.

Default The dealer should have cut you a key on the spot to do it.

They have a little machine that cuts the groove out and as long as you don't need a chip the key will work fine in the ignition.

Default Read the last two lines of the tech article....

The first time I tried to program a new remote, the old one stopped working. The second time I followed the instructions on the last two lines (If both of your remotes don't work, do the above for the first key, but on step #3, press the 'UNLOCK' button twice. The lights will flash twice, then continue on with step #4), and both remotes worked.

Default The owner's manual has an easy way to reprogram remote...

...that only uses the one key. You just press the lock or unlock button, then lock the door with the key manually. Then unlock manually, remove key, and try it. It should be reprogrammed. My remotes have lost their programming three times since I got the car in November. I usually have to replace the batteries to get them to work again.

Something is wrong electricaly, cheap bulbs aside, there is no way you need 3 bulbs. Short?

Default Agreed, but it may be different across years...

I posted my experiences with my '01, but I know my '01 and '00 had subtle differences in the central locking module - e.g. '00 locked at some nice round kph number and '01 locks at a nice round mph number.

Maybe some of the confusion as to the "right" sequence is year-based - because I've done the '00 and '01 reprograms both WITHOUT a key in the ignition, and WITHOUT affecting the other keys.
