Mobil one Synthetic 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil
Hi,
I want to change the engine oil every 5000 miles. Not sure 5W- 30 or 10W-30 Mobil one Synthetic oil is suitable for my 1999 A6 quattro. Currently it is 39,500 miles. I live in Detroit of Michigan.
Your advice will be appreciated.

Both are suitable.
I believe that the top three choices for oil are
- Redline 10W30
- Amsoil 10W30
- Mobil1 0W40 (as well as the grades you mentioned)
Your 1999 A6 is a 2.8 and because it doesnt experience as much stress as the turbo engines you don't need (nor see a great benefit from) the high performance (and more expensive) Redline oil.
I use Mobil1 0W40 and it's provided significant improvement over the Audi oil. The engine runs smoother and quieter. Check Stoney's links for more oil comparison info.

Re: Synthetic oil. I keep seeing the same references ..
to synthetic oils, and all seems to ignore (not knowing of) NEO (Long Beach in LA). They have made synthetic as long as AMSOIL and provides an excellent series of products.
I drove AMSOIL all for approx 10 years, and changed to NEO (now 12 years) when AMSOIL changed to a lesser quality product. I run their 5-30 viscosity, as they only have 0-5 racing oil which is too low I believe.

I prefer Amsoil over Mobil, based on some of information...
... linked in the FAQ (see link below). I'd use their Series 2000 0W30 very 8 or 10k mi, or their 5W30 (less expensive) every 5k mi.

I'm not familiar with Neo, as pridbor wrote about, but would like to learn more.

I run Mobil 0W-30 in everything and change every 5K miles in 70-90 F ambient temp for max power.
