Default June 1st "C5 Drive" for A6/S6/allroad - Roll Call and Route Details...

<b>Meet: Sunday, June 1st, 10 am,
at Junipero Serra rest stop on Highway 280 north of 92. </b>

<b>Reasons for the this route (same as last year):</b>

* Meeting point is central, near 92 and 280. Will allow more people to drop in.
* People can drive part of the route and then drop out to make other commitments.
* Meeting and stopping places have plenty of parking and are good for taking photos.
* Best roads I can find that aren't too far South for most people.
* Relatively free of gravel and traffic.
* Among the best scenery in the Bay Area.

Please post a follow-up, saying if you can make it.

<b>Route Summary: </b>

Highway 92 to Skyline, South to 84, 84 to Pescadero Creek Rd, then to the coast, including a run on <a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/97481.phtml">Stage Road (click for video).</a> South on Hwy 1, then inland near Davenport (well North of Santa Cruz) starting on Bonny Doon Rd, to Felton at Hwy 9. North on Hwy 9, to a turnout just shy of Skyline for pictures, then 9 to Pierce Rd into Saratoga and freeways home.

At the end of the planned route, go home via Hwy 85 or 280 in Cupertino.

<b>Meeting Place: </b>

The <A HREF="http://www.frserragarden.com/">Highway Rest Stop with the Statue of Father Junipero Serra</A>. You can see the statue from either side of the Freeway, pointing across the highway towards <A HREF="http://pages.prodigy.net/rhorii/xtalsprg.htm">Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir</A> and the San Andreas Fault.

Reach the Rest Stop by coming North on Hwy 280, just past Bunker Hill exit (also labelled Crystal Springs, Hwy 35/Skyline, just North of Hwy 92). If you are coming South, you'll have to exit here and turn around. <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&addr=&city=San+Mateo&state =CA&slt=37.563099&sln=-122.324501&mlt=37.529900&mln=-122.356100&zip=&country=us&mag=9&cs=7&BFClient=&BF Key=&poi=&poititle=&map.x=85&map.y=59"> This Map</A> shows the exit's location (zoom out to see the surrounding highways).

<b>Detailed Directions: </b>

1. Exit the Rest Stop, going North to the <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Ds=n&uz=&BFClient=&BFKey=&poi=&poititle=&B FCat=&Pyt=Tmap&ed=bfLJcOp_0TqLPiMH1QiOF4188x6IcF5H Tkb9hIXSr6RDZe1Ylscg.TXDTEqTbaAht_.5St4SLhQ8B7lVpG iY3C6awEZO&csz=San+Mateo%2C+CA&country=us&mag=9&cs =7&map.x=67&map.y=7">Black Mountain Exit (Golf Course Drive)</A>.
2. At top of exit, turn left past the onramps, then left again on Skyline Blvd (35) South, paralleling the freeway. Pass Crystal Springs and Bunker Hill.
3. <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&addr=&city=San+Mateo&state =CA&slt=37.563099&sln=-122.324501&mlt=37.528200&mln=-122.362300&zip=&country=us&mag=8&cs=7&BFClient=&BF Key=&poi=&poititle=&map.x=293&map.y=363">Turn right on Highway 92</A> (also is Skyline, 35, continuation of Canada Rd).
4. At the summit, turn South on Skyline <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&addr=&city=San+Mateo&state =CA&slt=37.563099&sln=-122.324501&mlt=37.512400&mln=-122.350900&zip=&country=us&mag=8&cs=7&BFClient=&BF Key=&poi=&poititle=&map.x=119&map.y=390">(where the Memorial park is)</A>, and enjoy the panorama and many nice, fast turns. I rarely see CHP up here, but there is always a first time. Watch for bikes and motorcycles!
5. When we reach Sky Londa, we will <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&ed=X3r1YOp_0TqFXBrEJa0xVonCax4EUW 5bq0okFLGIgknkDIcQh_6rytMmFCrPX1_UAhx1g2M8VijEKP9f sOqnhbGUmXdL&csz=San+Mateo,+CA&country=us&cs=7&nam e=&desc=&poititle=&poi=&uz=&ds=n&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFC lient=&mag=7&newmag=8">go right at 84</A> (La Honda Road), and through the town of La Honda.
6. After La Honda, watch for a <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&addr=&city=San+Mateo&state =CA&slt=37.563099&sln=-122.324501&mlt=37.314900&mln=-122.272800&zip=&country=us&mag=8&cs=7&BFClient=&BF Key=&poi=&poititle=&map.x=194&map.y=246">left turn onto Pescadero Creek Road</A> (toward Sam McDonald County Park).
7. Within a few miles, take the right fork to stay on Pescadero Creek Rd where it is met by Alpine Rd.
8. At this point, we are on a smaller, very fun canyon, Pescadero Creek Rd, which goes all the way to the coast. I suggest we stop just before Stage Rd in Pescadero, pulling over before the intersection. It is a small town where we can grab a snack or lunch if the time is right.
9. We reassemble and go North on Stage Rd to where it meets Hwy 84. This stretch of road has no lines, no shoulders, and is just a locals' road through some ranchland. On <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&ed=SGZ7T.p_0Tp9p4X5PHoYPOjvtfSNTg 7JbUPXR6KhuPhMyUjeA4faByY8jS6EALtfE5hcgTOMbzvhecLX pavoLWHIsnG8&csz=San+Mateo,+CA&country=us&cs=7&nam e=&desc=&poititle=&poi=&uz=&ds=n&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFC lient=&newmag=8">this map</A>, Stage Road is the vertical line leaving Pescadero. 11. Just South of Davenport, we turn inland on <a href="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Ds=n&uz=&BFClient=&BFKey=&poi=&poititle=&B FCat=&Pyt=Tmap&ed=6j0tyep_0TqvQRLTszvUo.P9s8Lv0Whz SW2jOSYDo7QL8L7fpgfAzHTI98H9AKt9oMCInd5JzaTr0nv0pn PofT9pFuKp&csz=San+Mateo%2C+CA&country=us&mag=7&cs =7&map.x=360&map.y=377">Bonny Doon</a> which becomes Pine Flat.
12. At an <A HREF="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Ds=n&uz=&BFClient=&BFKey=&poi=&poititle=&B FCat=&Pyt=Tmap&ed=CWp1sep_0TqJ.Nl5hNjr23G_86uvnVSB dGkQPaSA3dBPGp1tXGpql.B54mM6LmIe2QsicWG5AAhfImoBFF K55O75nVyP&csz=San+Mateo%2C+CA&country=us&mag=7&cs =7&map.x=306&map.y=21">intersection</A>, stay to the left which is Pine Flat Rd (passing Smith Grade on the right).
13. Stay on Pine Flat until we hit <a href="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&ed=XlkMd.p_0To.zQPD.UDTR31UAEfdHM CanANtrwtuws5clt65X9iHK0IykSRoNxtuNJBuO6i4PbwQWWeM WihuOiJe5A9B&csz=San+Mateo,+CA&country=us&cs=7&nam e=&desc=&poititle=&poi=&uz=&ds=n&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFC lient=&mag=7&newmag=8">Empire Grade</a>, and turn right.
14. Take a left on Felton-Empire Grade(different from Empire Grade) to <a href="http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&ed=_r.YGup_0TrS08EYefGiaWbC4SwSB_ CXhVPfueI7qxQwyCkotYO.UJWCocS0Kw7R87fxtBXC.RnNnw5s 4_JpjCIPoyNv&csz=San+Mateo,+CA&country=us&cs=7&nam e=&desc=&poititle=&poi=&uz=&ds=n&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFC lient=&mag=7&newmag=8">Felton</a> at Highway 9 (unless you wish to go home towards Santa Cruz by staying straight on Empire Grade to UCSC).
15. Turn left on Highway 9 (unless you wish to go home towards Santa Cruz by turning right).
16. Bear right on Highway 9, passing 236 (twice, it is a loop).
17. A few miles past the second joining of 236, but a few miles before we reach Skyline (Hwy 9), there is a large, paved turnout on the right with restrooms and a great view out over the basin and forest. We can stop there, take pictures, and regroup.
18. From there, we can travel farther North past skyline, down 9 toward saratoga. I recommend a left on Pierce Road (toward and past the Mountain Winery concert venue); its a nicer drive.
19. A left at Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road aims us towards onramps at Hwy 85, and beyond that, at Hwy 280.

<b>What to bring: </b>

* FRS radios (those walkie-talkie type things, set to channel 4-11)
* Water and food
* Full tank o' gas
* Cameras
* Maps (in case you leave the caravan early)

See <A HREF="https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/253552.phtml">this message</A> for pictures, video, and comments from previous years.

Please let me know if you find a bad link or map.

As always, use care and respect speed laws on these roads. Some are frequented by bicycles and motorcycles, and some areas are residential. Group events too often include a ticket or accident, but the A6 crowd manages to avoid these. Let's keep it that way.

Default See you there. Will we brown-bag our lunch stop, or go to a restaurant?

I'd vote to brown-bag it on the beach (of course, it might be cold). Are there any park areas that we could stop to eat? Wife will be out of town - I'm leaving myself very early the next morning - so I'll still have room for Joel and a video camera.

Restaurant is okay too...

Default Re: June 1st "C5 Drive" for A6/S6/allroad - Roll Call and Route Details...

I'm a new owner and nobody knows me, but I'm definitely up for the drive. With any luck, I'll have the H-SPort sway bars on by then.

Default I'd say to brown bag, but inevitably some won't have time. Perhaps they can get food at ...

Davenport, and we can pick a nearby beach that would have parking. I'll check into it...
