Solved the faulty blinker mystery...
and fixed my housing and I saved a grand total of 1600 from the bill from dealer. I think there should be a recall for this problem --- blinker blinks really fast, and super dim when blinking. Ocassional beeping noise from the console too. The problem was that one of the 3 leads going to the blinker is too close to the shiny plastic. The shiny plastic is grounded, so it's like a short circuit. IMHO it's juz BAD design, like, it's really close, and if it gets stuck there from like a pothole bump, there's no way that it'll come back out. You can actually reach that after you take off you bulb holder. Look for the green lead (the closest to shiny plastic) and just make sure that it's not touching the shiny plastic housing. And that's it. Good luck!

Re: Solved the faulty blinker mystery...
Charlie, can you post more details on this find...As you know I have the same problem - Even after the switch was replaced...I even went into a newer A6(2003), and it did the same thing...
More details....Please...
I will be in Pittsburgh next week...I am flying...If I were driving out there I'd ask you to look at it for me...

Details...
After you screw out the bulb holder, you can see 3 metal contacts on the housing. There are 3 wires going to these contacts, and one of them is green. It's very hard to see without taking the entire housing out, but possible with tools. Try to bend the clip directly in contact with the wire (not the metal contact touching the bulb holder), and make sure that none of the metal clips touch the silver plastic housing of the blinker reflector. If you really can't reach, you'd have to get the housing out. It's possible to do so for the Xenon housing without taking off you bumpers (but very high risk of breaking plastic tabs on the housing, I broke one each side when putting back). The housing is still pretty securely intact, but not as tight as before...Oh well that saved me some money...

8xx USD each side, the dealer quoted me...
They told me that there's no way to fix it, and the only solution is to replace the ENTIRE housing...including ballast...I'm like, what's wrong with the ballast?!
