Xenon bulb replacement...what has to be removed?
Looked under the hood in the rain today, and it sure wasn't self explanatory. Do the whole housings have to be unscrewed/moved to replace the bulbs?

No, you pop the clamps off the back of the housing....
then pull off the black plastic backing. There is a connector on the back of the projector with an electrical warning on it. You have to turn it and then pull it off.
Then there is a circular thingamadoo (no good word for it really) around the actual back of the xenon lens holding the bulb in place. You have to turn this one direction (I assume left - can't remember) then it will pop right off. After that the bulb will just be sitting in there and can be removed.
Don't touch the bulb if you are ever planning on reusing it.

What kind of modification??? And......
For the sake of safety, remember there is a 23,000 volt ballast strapped to the bottom of the housing. Just for the sake of added personal safety, I suggest you first pull the harness plug that is connected to the lower bottom of the rear of the housing. Doing so, will cut all power to the housing, and make working the area much safer for you. Even if the risk is a small one, I don't think it's worth it just for the sake of not pulling the plug. The Osram or Phillips D2S bulbs are suppposed (in theory) to be good for 2600-2700 hours of use. If it's not the bulb that's actually bad, then you could be looking at a ballast failure. If that's the case, then you do have to remove the housing. But it is more sticky than that. The ballast that is strapped with a metal strap to the bottom of the housing will not clear your bumper without causing major finish damage. You have to loosen and lower or remove the bumper cover entirely, to safely remove the housing.

Stock is "Stage 1" at 4300K, direct replacement using..
existing ballast & wiring is "Stage 2" at 6000K.
Did this on the 5series, which was much easier. The ballasts were mounted right on the back of the headlight housings and there was more space in there. Everything was in the open. I'll see how this goes....and it ain't warming up that much here.
