Has anyone found good 2-piece front rotors for the A6 2.7T?

Default Just measured my rotors...

I have 30MM thick rotors in my 2002 2.7T Sport.

According to Bentley, this means I have the HP-2 setup.

Is this a good thing? I will do a search, and am interested an an opinion.

Thanks!

Default BIRA Replirotor...

<center><img src="http://www.bira.org/images/replirotors/DCP_0035.JPG"></center><p>
BIRA designed a two-piece, direct-replacement rotor for the HP-2 brakes. It has two very important advantages over the stock rotor:

* It is much lighter (9 lbs. vs. 18 lbs. for stock).

* It uses directional internal cooling vanes, which are much larger than the non-directional internal cooling vanes of the stock rotor.

There is more information at the link as well as lots of photos.

I have held these rotors in my hand and they are of excellent quality. I know the customer (A6), so I'll see if I can't get him to post his thoughts. The down side is that they are initially expensive (more than the $700 I have seen quoted here), but after they wear, only the rotor ring and hardware has to be replaced; the billet aluminum hat does not wear and is reused.

They also have designs using the 993 rotor, but that is for use with a Porsche caliper (full brake kit).

A reminder: you buy the bracket from BIRA ($20 to join) and then source the rest of the parts yourself. It's a little more work, but there can be significant cost savings.

Cheers,<ul><li><a href="http://www.bira.org/press/plus.html">BIRA Replirotor</a></li></ul>

Default Re: BIRA Replirotor...

I took a look at BIRA's website, and am just at bit lost. As a member, does one get more information regarding the specifics of the various brackets/rotors/kits?

$20 is not the problem, It's just not obvious from the BIRA website what you get and how the logistics work.

It seems to be a bunch of folks who share an interest and data. This could be perfect.

I'll contact them directly with my questions, and thank everyone here for the pointers!

Default Actually, you got it right...

&gt; It seems to be a bunch of folks who share an interest and data.

Yes, the BIRA website is a bit confusing and difficult to navigate (Gregs are you listening?), but your above idea of BIRA is correct.

If you join, you will become a member of a private site with better detail of the "kit" components and more importantly, you will become a member of a private email list where you can ask questions and discuss brake issues as much as you want. There are some serious brake freaks there. Obviously, there is a huge amount of information to be found in their archives as well. For any given setup, you will find original design ideas, and posts about prototype testing as well as opinions from ordinary folks who run the kits. Many of the original design ideas came from BIRA's founder, Greg Amy, but several designs have come from the membership as well.

Anyway, go ahead and shoot Greg an email at BIRA and I'm sure he can answer all of your questions.

Cheers,
