Major tire blowout. Tire suggestion.
After 6800 miles on my 2nd set of S03s, my front tire blew this weekend. The entiire inner sidewall separated from the tire and a 10 yd strip of rubber wrapped itself around my axle. No damge to the car but it almost made me miss my tee time at Cinnibar. Anyway, I have decided to go with a tire that will give me a few more miles. Any suggestions on a high performance tire (not willing to sacrifice too much here) suitable for the A6 4.2 that has good tread wear and performs well in the rain?

Pirelli PZero Assymetrico tires are pretty good, but a tad bit expensive.
They're probably more than your S03s but I think they perform better when wet and when dry, just be prepared to deal with quite a bit of road noise.

Toyo Proxes T1-S perform well (especially in rain) but have softer sidewalls ->
Pilot Sports perform well, and have stiffer sidewalls.
I've heard good things about the newer Pirellis (P-Zero Rossos, and even the Nero's - but definately not the old P-Zero Assimetrico's. The Assimetrico's consistently place at the bottom of most "max performance" tire comparisons.)
Other than that, S03's, and an adjustment to driving style. I don't mean go slower, but sliding isn't always faster. =) You should do a track day, get a lap timer, and find out what really makes for quick times - with you and your car. It'll be different for everyone, but you may find that there's a less brutal way to move quickly.
Then again, you could just buy tires wholesale. =) Sliding is certainly fun.

I don't think I'll ever understand how this happens...
Modern tire technology is so robust that I always wonder how people have tires "blow out" on them. Was that tire ever damaged somehow?

I'm not sliding the car...
and I've spent time on the track. Although i drive aggressively, I don't try to slide out my Audi. I just drive with a heavy foot and turn aggressively. Thanks for the suggestions though.
