key remote issues (resolved)
Okay, so I tried Richard's solution (linked below). Didn't work, so I gave up, figuring I'd call dealer some time soon. yadda yadda yadda, I got it to work with slight modification to his solution. I believe the trick is lock car with key FIRST, then unlock car with key, then press the lock button. Anyways, it's working (until it happens again). Thanks.

Re: key remote issues (resolved)
I have a similar problem. Seems my remote doors want to lock and set the alarm/kill switch all without any buttons pushed on the remote. This started happening to my last month after I dropped my A6 off for an oil change. When I picked up the car, the trunk had been released. I thought nothing of it, shut it and drove away. Later that day I went up to the post office, and when I returned to my car the alarm had set, and the doors locked. Every time I tried to double klick the doors, they just relocked. They even locked me in once I got in side the car with the key. Similar to Hainder's case I was freaking out in the middle of town. I was able to get in the car and start it, but the locks kept trying to re-lock.
That afternoon I went home, and checked the electrical fuses? I then re-syncronized the keys. Luckily the problem went away.
It has returned today 1/4/03. I just tried Harinder's re-sync? I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Anyone ever hear of this, or my car like the movie Christine?
