S6 (4.2) lower door trim on A6 Avant (multiple pix)
A few weeks back, Mark (aka "Seattle Audi") posted that he just installed the lower door trim from an allroad to his 2002 S6. Luckily, I was the first to ask the question: "so what happens to the original door trim?" $125 and 7 days later (thanks Mark!) I was in possession of those 4 black strips of plastic/rubber. Mark and I spoke two more times and he assured me that all I would need was 45 minutes and nice glass of cabernat to complete the project.
Needless to say, this mod real straightforward. Here's why I did it:
1) give my 2.8 avant a more aggessive look (I couldn't afford the S6 but, really wanted one)
2) keep my two front doors from scraping against the wall in my garage (those $5 "door guards" just won't cut it. You'll notice the width of the S6 trim vs. my stock setup.
3) the wider door trim will [help] keep unnecessary road debris from scratching my paint. I upgraded my tires/rims from 205/55-16 to 225/45-17 and the wider tires have been contributing to this problem. The other alternative would be splash guards; I'll reevaluate in another 6 months.
The install was quite simple.
1) All you do is remove the two screws from the inside of each door (Please note: You should replace those same screws to the exact location; they are slightly different and one of the two will have a washer).
2) Open each door (halfway) and slide each piece towards the rear of the car. Each piece will slide back at least two inches before it will fall out. Be carefull not to force the trim; there are 5-8 plastic tabs on each piece that you don't want to break (obviously)
3) Clean the exposed area to make it easier when you install the new trim. A lot of crap can collect behind these things.
4) Install the new pieces in reverse and repeat three times.
Learning:
All of the A6 (2.8, 2.7T, 4.2), S6 and Allroad lower door trim is competely interchangable. What I installed was wider pieces of (unpainted) plastic/rubber. On the 4.2's out there, the lower door trim is painted to match the exterior. Between SeattleAudi, Brooklyn2.7 and myself, we have confirmed these facts.
Enjoy.

Nice look, but don't kid yourself, these collect MORE road debris, dirt, leaves, etc...
...and I don't think they make any difference whatsoever in "protection" of the car/paint/doors. As to protecting doors better than oem strips located higher up on the door, I'm not sure the ones you installed actually extend farther away from the body thean the regular ones (since the new ones are much lower on the door, and the door's curved back in toward the body as you get lower).
Then again, you may be just "justifying" the $125, which is understandable. And as I say, the car looks very nice and I think that's the primary benefit. (Unless you're "seattle" who can now fill his gas tank 3 times with what he made off this deal!)
Nice post, too.

Thanks. Actually the S6 lower door trim extends beyond the upper trim on the door....
...it actually gives me 1/2 inch additional clearance vs. the middle door trim.
Objective: Achieved.
Thanks for the compliment.
