Yeah, 50k goes really fast, though. At least when you think up excuses to drive!

Oooh, I thought the warranty was for 4 years (like some other manufacturer who will remain nameless)

Default With the warranty I was looking at, if you didn't use it during the term, you got your money back

The brochure is at work so I don't know the name, but it looked pretty comprehensive. With the logic of fix any small problems out of pocket and you get your money back. And if you have a big problem, it's covered and you're only out the cost of the warranty.

I have an excellent (exclusions are very clearly stated)warranty from Heritage, a GE company who the Audi service types I've queried say is great. I bought it when my '99 A6Q was only a year old but it includes zero deductible, AWD premium, and fully refundable if never used. Cost me $1,550. It just kicked in when I went off factory warranty in August 02, but it's 7/100, which adds four years and 50k miles to the factory.

My '99 has had the normal recall work done; beyond that I've had to replace a coolant temp sensor, the front brakes, both front doors' window guides, and all of the major engine oil seals and gaskets (as a precaution). All of it covered by Audi Advantage, including the brakes. So really my only out-of-pocket has been for the in-between oil changes. Because so much of my driving is in slow city traffic I have been a more frequent changer.

Other than that I still love the car and plan to take it into retirement with me at end of this year. But, for a complex machine like this I look at extended warranties like health insurance: you definitely don't want to go naked.

I guess it is a personal thing based on how risk averse you are.

Default Actually, few of them are "warranties." Some cover wear & tear, but even so...

These are mostly "extended service contracts", which, legally, are quite different from a "warranty." Actuarily speaking, you're right, they're figuring in a profit so the odds are against you, they figure what they'll spend vs. what they need to take in in premiums.

Anecdotally speaking, only 1 of my 4 service contracts paid for itself. I'm on the fence about getting one for the '01 A6 Avant, my independent tech (Porsche specialist, also does Audi warranty & repair overflow work) recommends against it (he gets paid either way).

OTOH, if you are really risk averse, a big ticket item can cover the cost of the contract, though your odds of having that expense are probably not high.

BTW, some contracts do cover wear and tear on many items, though most do not.

best,
Jon

Actually all I have is a claims number. I actually bought the policy through the broker who sold me the car. I would suggest you go to the GE website, and you'll find it, I believe under financial or insurance products.
